Legend tells of a fabulous tragedy.

Seventy years ago, a contingent of government ships set off from the Oriental Isles loaded with riches – a gift for a magnificent Princess. It was guarded by Eldemore's most notorious band of privateers – the Sea Wolves. Over twenty five ships-of-the-line-of-battle, filled to the brim with fighting men and great cannons – surrounding treasure ships fit to burst with gold. The treasure fleet was regarded as being the most unconquerable of it's day.

And then it vanished.

Just like that, over a dozen of the era's greatest warships, seven heavily laden treasure ships and thousands of sailors... vanished.

No wreckage was ever recovered, the gold was never found, and no one ever claimed to know what had happened to them.

Except one...

One of the greatest pirates to ever sail the seas in his time, was pegged as the culprit. Captain Ezekiel Blake was a ruthless blackguard who broke and twisted every law ever thought up. Along with a fleet of Serval Seekers, and a ship full of slippery felines, he pillaged and plundered the Eldemorain coasts for years, until he was finally brought to justice by those vigilante Sea Wolves, and made to dance the hangman's jig. Many accused him of masterminding the great heist. On the gallows the mad old Captain swore that no one would ever undo the eleven locks of his heart and uncover his greatest secret. For years, scholars have tried to puzzle out the meaning of this cryptic phrase. Did Blake have a treasure hoard stashed somewhere? Did it have anything to do with the most infamous unsolved disappearance he was accused of perpetrating? Was it merely the ramblings of a mad man?

Well now, seventy years is a long time to have your heart locked up. Tides have ebbed and flowed, technology has grown, gates have been sealed and broken open... The Sea Wolves have since banded together into the great Navy of Eldemore, but those feisty servals continue to thwart them in their games of cat and mouse.

The Legend of Blake's Heart all but died away.

And then the Gates broke open.

Oblivion now tears across the land, ravaging all he influences. Sickness sweeps the land, crops are failing, refugees flee their homes in hopes of escape – in short, Chaos reigns supreme. The economy is on the brink of collapse, and the government has drained their coffers, selling off a large number of their fleet to off set the cost of calamity. In such bleak times, a beacon of hope is needed – and the glimmer of gold would not be unwanted as well. To this extent, the Admiralty has commissioned a Captain and crew to find the fabled lost treasure. It's a gamble, to be sure, but what isn't in these dark times? They are desperate – and desperate times make for rather strange bedfellows...

The Seekers have volunteered one of their own ships and sailors to aid the Eldemorian Navy, on the agreement that the prize-money be split fifty-fifty. The Naval Board has granted this exuberant request - they must be in seriously bad straights to do so, as their officers are very much opposed to this action. And many of the pirates aren't too pleased about it either. After all it's well known that the Navy and the Seekers fight like Servals and Dires!

So here we are. Two old enemies forced to work together for the greater good – or greater gold, depending upon your persuasion.

So what brings you here friend? The promise of adventure? The chance for lost treasure? The honor of this noble quest? Or perhaps something else entirely?

Just pick a ship, and sign your name on the line.

Now then, will you be a Patriot, or a Pirate?

Board and Broadsides is a semi-literate Eldemore roleplay revolving around Pirates and Navymen, being forced to work together while tracking down a mythical treasure, and all the chaos that will ensue. It's Dire Wolf against Sea Serval, Seeker against Lawman, and the whole of us against the world.

Owing as how we've never been given information on any Eldemorian Navy, I've made one up based loosely on the Royal Navy during that grand old time of tall ships and pirates. Players are encouraged to take the information provided both from the lore, and the roleplay, as well as work with other players to craft their own character's stories in the course of the game.

(Rules and Regulations)

Game Rules

  • All site rules apply

  • This is a semi-literate to literate roleplay. Good grammar is required. Posts should be at minimum a good sized paragraph or two. Two or three lines is not acceptable.
I generally believe that two paragraphs is a good goal to shoot for. A paragraph is a single idea, so two paragraphs means you are introducing two new ideas or elements – whether it's a piece of dialogue, scenery element, character's thoughts, reactions to events, etc. We want to make sure the next roleplayer has plenty of ideas to work off of, and that everyone is kept active in the storytelling

  • Posts should be neat, organized and legible. Keep paragraphs separate, and be sure to keep different characters distinct from one another. All roleplaying should be done in third person past tense. Keep Out of Character discussion in brackets and clearly apart, and keep any large discussions on the Discussion Thread

  • Do not leave people behind. This is a slower paced roleplay. Take your time with replies, and give others a chance to respond. If someone doesn't respond in one or two days you may move on ahead another page.

  • I really encourage plotting and cooperative storytelling among participants! Please use our discussion thread, and work together to come up with interesting conflict, characters, back stories, sub-plots, and crazy situations! Feel free to ask questions or run ideas by me, especially if it concerns characters or potential plots

  • Respect each other, and work together. Basic roleplaying etiquette is expected. No killing/seriously harming other people's characters without permission, nor changing what they've previously wrote

  • If you are going away for while, or just need a break from writing let Silverhart know so the story can continue for everyone else

Characters

  • All characters must be original. You may not use someone else's character, or a character that belongs to another canon

  • All creatures must be Eldemore adopts or customs. Customs must be owned by you. You cannot use someone else's custom

  • New characters may only be created/introduced when a ship is in port. Every new character must 'sign on' to the ship; which will serve as their introduction. All character creation will be closed when ships are at sea. Check the Thread title/first post to see if the roleplay is accepting new characters

  • You may have a total of six characters total (Eldemorians and creatures) and a total of three Eldemorian characters. (Human, Trueborn, or Halfborn)

Eldemorian characters may bring along a total of two creatures on this voyage. So you can have one Eldemorian with two creatures, one Eldemorian with one, and one unbonded Eldemorian; or three Eldemorain characters each with one creature; or two Eldemorian characters each with two creatures. I may be persuaded to make small exceptions later on, but I feel this is a good limit to start with

  • All creatures must have an Eldemorian traveling companion

  • Creatures can include Rune Dragons, Otterlings, Dire Wolves, Sea Servals, Glasswork Dragons, Ligers, Jackalopes, Humming Bumbles, Prong Foxes and only Pygmies of Elkrin, Rune Drakes, Griffins, and Slepinirs.
I am not allowing Ancients, Phoenixes, adult Elkrin, adult Rune Drakes, adult Griffins, or adult Slepinirs at this time, on account of how large/powerful/rare they are

  • Characters must be believable and within reason. A sixteen year old master swordsman doesn't make sense. Likewise your character should fit into Eldemore's lore and setting as best you are able to determine

  • The minimum age your Eldemorain character can be is fifteen. Characters under twenty one will not be permitted in high ranking postions

  • You may only claim one high ranking position (this includes the Commissioned and Warrant Officers, as well as captain and quartermaster for pirates). The only exception being if we need a certain character and don't have enough people to play it. I would simply like for everyone who would like an officer character to have a shot at one

  • The use of copyrighted images in forms is prohibited. You are free to add an image to your form if you have the rights to it. You must include a link to who created it/where you got it. Personally I prefer that everyone write out their characters' appearance. Having an image won't excuse you from including a short paragraph describing them

  • Characters should be well rounded, with motivations, flaws, vices, strengths and weaknesses. Get creative!

Gameplay Information

    The Purser
The Purser is our narrator for this story. He will not interact with any of our characters, but instead will occasionally post with an event to liven up our adventure if things get slow – an approaching storm, an enemy ship on the horizon, as well as when we find a key or riddle that will lead us to Blake's supposed treasure. He will also keep us up to date on the state of the ship should it be damaged. Pay heed when he posts and have your characters react accordingly.

    Ports, and Under Sail

During the roleplay the ship can be in one of three states - Under sail, docked in a port, or anchored offshore.

While the ship is under sail we will not take on any new characters. New characters can only be created and introduced when we're in port. If you'd like to create a new character you must wait until the ship is in port. This serves as a good way to introduce a new character by having them be a new recruit on the ship.

The Captain is the one who decides where the ship shall go on this voyage. They get to decide when and where the ship will weigh anchor. In order to reach certain destinations we need to be sailing for a set amount of time via the Watch Schedule. Watches can be stood while under sail or anchored offshore, but don't have to be stood while in port.

The Captain can also decide to anchor the ship offshore at anytime.

    Watch Schedule

It takes time to sail from place to place, and on our ship time passes by way of a Watch Schedule. The Watch Schedule only effects the pacing of events, such as reaching new ports, or repairs being made to the ship, so players are free to roleplay the passage of time on ship or shore however they please. Aboard a ship, the day is divided into six watches. Only characters who are sailors or officers can stand watches – landsmen and passengers cannot stand watches.
Every sailor character can stand one watch once a page by posting this form in lieu of a roleplay post:

    Code: Select all
[character name here] has stood their Watch

Sailors can't roleplay while on watch, so this is a good tool to use if you're stuck on a reply, need to be skipped for a round, or if you just want to get to the new destination quickly. XP

Watches stood are kept track of in the Captain's Log. Every six watches stood equals one day. Each destination requires a different amount of days to reach depending on our starting location. Once we reach the needed number of watches stood and days passed, we'll have reached our destination (unless something goes horribly, horribly wrong in the roleplay). At any point the Captain can also decide to anchor the ship off shore which requires no watches stood.

Watches only need to be stood while at sea, or while anchored off shore. They do not need to be stood while in port, and the Captain can choose to leave the port whenever they wish.

    Sea Battles
What's a pirate roleplay without sea battles? Occasionally we may run across enemy ships. The sea is full of unscrupulous characters, from smugglers, to privateers, to pirates who operate outside the Seekers' influence - and they may well try to take our ship, and the treasure for themselves.

Sometimes these ships will be announced by the Purser, but there's nothing to stop the players from deciding to throw a good ol' sea battle into the mix themselves, and have their characters spy an enemy on the horizon.

When an enemy is sighted, the Purser will look through the spy glass and inform us about the ship in question – it's size, number of guns and so forth. Players are then free to roleplay the action as they see fit, either deciding to engage them, or to try to outmaneuver them. The three outcomes of a Sea Battle in this game are either running away, surrendering or a boarding action. Sinking a ship would not be a very good idea – after how would we get our prize money?! (I lie - there is no prize money - there is only the love of the game).

If you choose to engage, the only rule is that no more then one broadside from your ship may be fired in a single player's post (if you have more then one character in a post this still counts as one player's post). After every few posts during a sea battle the Purser will update us on the state of the ship. If no or little damage was received to the ship in the course of the players' posts, the Purser will use a random generator to decide if any damage was taken, taking into account the size, maneuverability, and gunnery of each ship, as well as the skills and actions of the characters. Players will then need to continue the roleplay with the new damage effecting the gameplay. It can sometimes pay to roleplay your own ship taking damage. Conversely, if you're clever enough and judge your enemy correctly you can occasionally get away with little to no damage. You're free to strategize with your fellow players to determine the best course of action.

If boarding occurs, it's a free-for-all. You can roleplay however you'd like, and write the story as you all see fit, either gaining control of the other ship, or being captured yourselves.

Any damage the ship sustains needs to be repaired. A ship that is damaged is extremely vulnerable, both to weather and attack, and will also be slowed down. As with traveling, it takes a set number of days to repair the damage on a ship. Minimum damage can be repaired while traveling at sea. More extensive damage requires the ship to weigh anchor for a few days in order to be fixed. The Captain can choose to weigh anchor off shore for a few days, or travel to a safe port.

    The Keys
Your main mission (should you choose to accept it...) involves finding the treasure. At the start of the game we only have one clue: Blake mentioned eleven locks, and locks need keys. There are riddles scattered around Eldemore that will tell us where the keys are. When we find one, work together to unravel the riddle, and the answer will point us in the direction of the key. Should you land in the correct location, the Purser will let us know that we have arrived in the location spoken of in the riddle, and you can begin your search for the key. The riddle will often have references to where the key could lie. Use those to determine where you will roleplay your characters looking. If you look in a place that fits the riddle, you'll find a key! The key will lead us to our next destination, and so on and so forth. If no one can find the key... then we'll need to find another hint... I'm sure Blake left some clues around the area for us to find. Your characters are totally free to ignore the riddles if they so choose. After all, not all characters may be after the treasure, they may have... other motives...

    Official Site Lore

    Game Lore
(Non-canon lore applying to the roleplay. As we roleplay, and add our own stories, as well as learn more about Eldemore's official lore I may adjust this section occasionally - or I may be lazy and not. XP)

    The Navy
The main fighting force for the Eldemorian Navy originated from the Dire Wolf Wardens. The Dire wolves – originally from the deserts, were found to be perfectly adapted to long sea travel, being able to go long stints on little food and water, and survive in temperature extremes. Their pack mentality among each other lent itself well to the confines of a ship, where everyone aboard must depend on his comrades to keep each other safe. It was a simple leap from the deserts into sea life. Thus began the ramshackle vigilante group, the Sea Wolves, a group of privateers and Dire Wolf Wardens hired to protect ports and merchant ships from the ravages of pirates.

Eventually the ramshackle group was brought together under the banner of the Eldemorian Navy, a full fighting force steeped in tradition and pride. The Navy protects the merchant trade routes from the ravages of the pirates and smugglers just waiting to snatch a poor fat merchantman out of the water, as easily as a Serval may snatch a fish. Officer positions on board Navy ships are favorite positions of second and third noble-borns - who are unlikely to inherit lands or titles, and so must find some other means of making their way in the world. However that hardly means the quarterdeck is restricted to those of the upper-class. On the contrary, the Navy is happy to welcome into it's ranks all classes, races, and genders - good sailors and commanders are hard to find and they're not picky. Any sailor who's served three or more years is more then welcome to take their lieutenant's test.

Magic creatures are always a welcome sight aboard Navy ships. Sailors are a superstitious lot, and it's said that happy Rune Dragons on a ship make for fair winds. Dire wolves are a common sight, used as they are to help with the hauling and fighting, and while Ligers are rare to see, they too are not unheard of serving alongside the sailors. Sea servals and their companions are generally looked on with much suspicion by their more honest fellows, but they serve many useful practices on board and so their trickery is tolerated. Otterlings are often companions to sailors, being innately lucky, and many sailors will refuse to sail at all unless there is at least one Otterling aboard. Just be sure to always check your cannons before firing, as curious Otterlings have been known to crawl into the barrels and get stuck.

    The Seeker Pirates
A large part of the pirates in Eldemore are part of the Seekers, that mysterious band of slippery folks whose interests don't always fall on the right side of the law. Most pirates are hardworking thieves, who like to playfully prick the Navy's sides, but generally try to avoid coming up against the Navy's big guns. While the Navy serves in the interests of the country and it's people, the pirates are more concerned with protecting their own from the Navy, and making a profit off fat, corrupt merchants. The pirates make the majority of their profit as smugglers, treasure hunters, and only occasionally by robbing rich merchant ships of their cargo to sell. The Seeker's pirates have a code of honor they maintain, with a focus on protecting and providing for their own, and never taking a life needlessly. A portion of their profits goes back to the Seekers in return for protection and trading connections. They do not go out into the sea looking for a fight, but are more then willing to bear their teeth and fight back in dire circumstances.

Seeker ships are usually bursting with Sea Servals and Prong foxes, as well as many Runes. Sea Servals are the obvious choice for a pirate's companion, and usually one could not ask for a better sea-going critter - it seems as if the Servals were built for life aboard a ship, and can be found from crow's nest to the orlop. Although it's notoriously difficult to get a Sea Serval to actually work, there's nothing a pirate like more then to see a lazy Sea Serval draped along a spar at midday. Before you think the Sea Serval dallying, know that they do serve useful roles aboard the ship - but they do so at their own convenience, which pirates seem to tolerate just fine.
Generally Dire wolves and Otterlings are somewhat more uncommon, since few get along with the Servals.

    In-Game Codes of Conduct
These are the laws which govern the characters in our world; by all means break them – but be prepared to suffer the consequences! Aboard ship, the Captain's word is more or less law, and they can decide how flexible they want to be with the articles. (Also, yes, I did actually use the real 1757 Articles of War, and the Articles of Agreement, a.k.a. the Pirate Code, in making these up. Let it never be said I am not thorough!)

    The Articles of War

    • Any person discovered committing treason against their nation and Navy shall face severe punishment and/or death
    • Every officer of the fleet, including their creatures, is expected to act with utmost decorum, courtesy, and fairness. Any officer found acting in scandalous, cruel or fraudulent manner, unbecoming of a gentleman or woman shall be punished and/or dismissed
    • No member of the fleet may take out of a prize any money or goods; unless absolutely necessary and to the benefit of the Navy, before it is first accounted by an admiralty court
    • When a prize is taken, all prisoners aboard her shall be treated justly and with respect
    • Every commander is expected to engage in battle any enemy they deem able to overcome; to run from a fight you can win is the highest dishonor
    • All persons and creatures must obey the orders of their commanders in time of battle
    • Every person must do his utmost to assist Navy ships and allies; as well as protect those ships in their charge
    • Every person belonging to the fleet shall not desert, nor entice others to do so
    • Mutinous acts, and the planning of them are strictly forbidden
    • No person shall strike, or lift weapon against one of their superior officers
    • All complaints a person aboard shall have should be made to a superior officer, who should then remedy the situation as best is able
    • There shall be no quarreling or brawling aboard ship
    • No person should unlawfully cause damage to a Navy ship, whether through negligence or willfulness; by fire, stranding, run upon rocks, etc.
    • No person shall fall asleep during their watch, or otherwise leave their station under any circumstance
    • Every person aboard ship is responsible for the actions of their bonded creatures and companions; should a creature break any rule aboard ship, their human companion will be held accountable
    • No person shall rob another
    • No person shall murder, nor cause undue harm to another's person, property, or creatures

    Code of the Pirate Brotherhood

    • Every person and creature has a vote in the affairs of the moment; and has equal share of all victuals
    • No person shall steal from the shares of prizes, or among his fellows. If a Serval or other creature is found to be robbing, it is the duty of the creature's partner to return the goods
    • Every person is expected to keep his weapons clean and fit for service
    • No person shall desert the ship, nor their station in battle
    • No striking of another on board; every quarrel is to be ended on shore
    • If any person or creature should lose a limb, become a cripple, or otherwise hurt, they are to be cared for out of the company's shares
    • The Captain and Quartermaster are to receive two shares of a prize; the master, boatswain and gunner, one share and a half; and other officers one and quarter
    • No prisoner shall be harassed or killed; but treated fairly, and as they deserve (if any persons should be undeserving, the crew may feel free to punish them as they see fit)
    • All Seekers must help other Seekers in need, and endeavor to protect and defend those of their own
    • All pirates are expected to behave under the Seeker Code of Honor: “No Seeker is to steal from the poor and needy, only the rich and ignorant; nor do they kill those they steal from unless no other option is given.”

    Historical Information
This is mostly for my own resource at the moment. You can take a look if you want, but it isn't required for the roleplay. Y'all can be as historically inaccurate as is - well, as is believable for Eldemore (I mean, we can't have pirates watching TV and texting 'YAR!' to each other, can we? No...). However, seeing as how very specific the terminology was to this particular setting, I thought I'd throw up a few resources so you can tell the difference between a main topgallant, and a mizzen topsail. Don't worry - it looks scary, but it's really not, and there won't be any tests. X3 The more technical stuff is mostly for my own reference - you lot just go look at the pretty pictures.

Board and Broadsides ---> The Purser's Desk

The Purser … serving as our Narrator … and bonded to unknown/none … as played by Silverhart

The mysterious Purser is our narrator. His duties include keeping track of all the characters, being in charge of all victualing and supplies, and the distribution of prize money - so you might want to stay on his good side. He also keeps track of all the characters, and the ship here. He's a strange old man – never seems to be around unless something's happening. Occasionally, he will liven things up by letting us know of any new developments, such as an encroaching storm, incoming ship, or approaching port. How does he know these things you ask?

    Don't ask.

    The Purser wrote:
    Image

When the Purser seeks to gain our attention in game he will post in quotes. Like so.

      The Good Ship Ascendance

The Seekers have put up one of their own ships - The Ascendance, for the task at hand. A former Navyman, she was captured by the Seekers ten years ago, and has served as a pirate ever since. The Seekers no doubt find this a very amusing irony.

The Ascendance is a 6th rate full rigged sail-powered frigate. She sports three square-rigged masts and carries sixteen 9-pounder guns, and four 3-pounder guns on her quarterdeck. She is 114 feet long, 32 feet at the beam, and her tons berthen is 519. She can hold a complement of 160. Like all frigates she is fast and maneuverable, and the ability to carry her guns high can make her a deadly opponent.

      The Decks
    • Weather Decks
      (decks exposed to the weather)
      • Quarterdeck - the deck above the main deck, running from stern to midway the length of the ship, and traditionally reserved for officers, and guests. The quarterdeck is where you'll find the ship's wheel, capstan, and binnacle holding the compass. Beneath the quarterdeck is the great cabin.
      • Forecastle (Fo'c'sle) - short deck built over the fore part of the main deck, extending from foremast to the bow. Beneath the forecastle is the galley stove.
      • Main Deck - (sometimes called the spar deck) the uppermost deck. On the main deck to the aft is the entrance to the great cabin, where the Captain berths.
    • Below Decks
      (enclosed decks)
      • Gun Deck - the deck below the main deck where the cannons are traditionally mounted. On a frigate it is still referred to as the gun deck even if the guns are not carried there. This deck is typically where the sailors sling their hammocks and take their mess. To the aft lies the wardroom, where the officers mess and sleep, and at the fore is the sickbay, and behind that the gunroom where the inferior officers typically berth.
      • Orlop - the lowest deck above the hold, lying below the waterline; contains store rooms, sail lockers, the cable tier, and the powder magazines. It is a quiet space, and many idlers berth here instead of on the busier gun deck, as well as the purser and the surgeon.
      • Hold - the cargo hold taking up the majority of the ship's hull beneath the orlop.

        The People
In this setting there is a set hierarchy of captain, officers, crew and supernumeraries. We're gonna go ahead and shake that hierarchy up by combining two crews – a Naval crew and a Seeker crew, and watching the chaos as everyone tries to figure out who has command of whom. The Naval officers and the pirates may both want command of this expedition, or they may want to work together (or they may want to give the appearance of wanting to work together and then take command of the ship – really it's all up to how are characters are feeling today).
As such, the hierarchy aboard this ship is somewhat flexible. On paper, and according to the Navy, their officers command this expedition, with the understanding that the pirates will be led by one of their own Captains. But remember this ship is still technically the property of the Seekers (well, they stole it, so that could be up for debate), and the independent pirates may not be too receptive of serving a different leader. On the other hand, many of the sailors may want to get along even if it means working with the enemy, since should disaster strike on this dangerous quest these men and women may prove to be your only lifeline.

Your character can pretty much be anything you'd like occupation-wise so long as there's a reason for you to be aboard. Don't limit yourself to what I've included here - I just threw them up to have something here right now. XP I shall happily add more as is needed. And don't feel limited by their race or gender either - we want as motley a crew as ever!

Our story begins on a summer day on the docks of Silverport. The day is brisk and sunny, and the wind is high, as sailors hurry to ready our ship, and prepare her to welcome aboard her Captain - or is it Captains? Well, they're just going to have to work that out among themselves, aren't they? Who can say who has the right to command this vessel? Pirate or Officer?

The two groups are eyeing each other with no small amount of distrust, not unlike a dire and a serval meeting for the first time. Many of them are aboard, helping to load the stores that will sustain them for the next few months, others are making their way along the docks. The good Purser has finished signing the last of the stragglers into his muster book and has disappeared to wherever it is he disappears to. (Don't worry if you missed signing on - he knows you're here. He knows all...)

Otterlings and Runes gambol about the docks and shores, playing with bits of rope and canvas shreds. The great Dire Wolves use their strength and teamwork to help move the great casks and barrels into the hold. The Sea Servals stalk the decks, daring any rat to sneak aboard. A few scuffles have broken out as the animals try to feel out the new pecking order brought on by this strange situation.

The thought of the voyage ahead is heavy in the minds of all the people - pirate and honest sailors alike; some are excited, others are filled with dread, a few are frustrated by the whole thing, and others still may feel hope for finding treasure long lost. But the same question reigns in everyone's mind: where do we begin?

"Well, what's the verdict, Keeper? How does everyone look?" Lyric asks his Serval from their vantage point in the main mast, hanging tightly to the rigging as he tries to get a sense for who was moving where with what- Vasco circling lazily above, mapping out the area for him as he carefully measures his new crewmates by measure of immediate threat.

"I think we should throw ourselves overboard now and spare ourselves the time," the Serval replies, clearly not impressed with the rag-tag crew, and even less impressed with the few Dire Wolves aboard as she glares daggers to the boards below, making sure everyone knew what she thought of them.

"That good, huh? Fun trip, then. Our favorite kind of trip," he says, releasing his hold on the rigging to lean backwards dangerously, "I can't wait. Let's grab our things then and get settled, shall we?"

Keeper gracefully unfolds herself with a long stretch, claws digging into the wood to keep her balance and they slide down together, gliding across the gently rocking deck with the grace only a Serval and her Seeker could have, sliding up next to the only familiar form on this soon-to-be-cursed ship.

"How about you, Matthias? How long do you think we have before we all die in a horrible, bloody mess?"

"I think we'll be lucky to get out of port, but. We've got Gracie, so luck's on our side!" Matthias replies cheerfully, holding up his tiny Otterling in triumph before setting her gently back down on Princess's back.

"Besides, we wouldn't go down without a lot of extra fire thrown into the mix, knowing the way we usually do things. Hey, seen-" Matthias breaks off mid sentence, rethinking his question. "Keeper or Vasco seen Sindri around? He said he'd come around say goodbye."

"Sindri? Don't think so. I'll let you know if there's someone as tiny as me nearby, though," Lyric answers, shifting his feet anxiously to the gentle rolling of the ship beneath him as Matthias hefts crates on deck, moving them into position to be moved again to the cargo hold or kitchens, judging by the smell.

"Still, we'll find a way to make this work, us pirates and navymen. You served for a couple years, right? Bridge the gap, diplomat," Matthias teases, huffing as he maneuvers more crates into place.

"The only thing this diplomat can tell you is whoever the captains are are most likely going to fight like Servals' crossing each other in an alleyway," he sighs, rolling his eyes and hopping on top of one of the cargo crates, crossing his legs. "The deciding factor's gonna be how much the captains care about those under their command. We'll probably be able to agree on keeping ourselves alive, if nothing else. If we can't, Leviathan, drown us now."

Matthias huffs out an amused breath, physically moving Lyric off the box so he can slide another in front of it.

"This'll be a trip, that's for sure. Stop lazin' about, Sailing Master, and move some cargo."

A knot twisted in the small man's stomach. His silvery-white curls bounced as he looked about frantically.
Where's he gone? he wondered with worry. Matthias had been right beside him one moment, and the next neither he nor Princess nor Gracie were anywhere in sight. He had to try to see him off! This was very possibly going to be the longest they'd be separated since they met, and Sindri was of no mind to make that separation be any longer.

"Could he be onboard already?" he wondered quietly, trying to keep himself out of the way of the small crowd in the port and failing almost comically. He couldn't particularly blame anyone for not seeing him, as nearly everyone towered above. Nonetheless, a frightening experience it was to be nearly trampled so many times in a row.

For once in his life, Sterling Roscoe was actually early. True, it was only out of a desire to claim a seat to the inevitable blood bath, but still.

Ah, but 'twas a glorious day to watch the fur fly. Sterling had always had something of a morbid curiosity when it came to impending doom. However it 'twas not that curiosity that led him to choose this nigh suicidal mission. No, that choice had belonged to an Admiral, who, after a rather unsightly fiasco on his main deck, had thought Sterling would do well to gain the “worldly experience” of this “grand venture” - as far away from his fleet as possible. In Sterling's defense, he hadn't been the first one to suggest the Jackalope racing – he'd just gone along with it. It wasn't as if anyone had gotten hurt – permanently. Their horns did grow back, right?

He'd been threatened with court martial and all the dishonor that came with it – which Sterling knew was a joke. With the current state of affairs, the Navy had better things to do then call out several Captains to pass judgment on a bit of healthy gaming. So rather then destroy Roscoe's good name the Admiral decided it would be better for the young man to go and get himself killed honorably for a lost cause. At least then his father could receive a medal or some such to display on his desk. The old man would be grateful for the paperweight.

The lieutenant stood on the quarterdeck, bouncing up and down on his toes with the gentle roll of the ship. Unsure of what to do he cast his eye across the ship. He'd been surprised on arriving at how prim and trim the little frigate was, given she'd been in possession of pirates recently. She was a pretty little thing – the brass was a bit tarnished here and there, and her sails were worn from salt and spray, but not tattered. She'd been freshly holystoned, and her decks fairly gleamed in the sunlight. The happily snapping flags above the royals seemed exceptionally bright and hopeful – unjustifiably so, in his opinion. The flags didn't seem to care for his opinion and went on snapping.

Attempting an air of importance and confidence, he stood up straighter, and looked down his nose at the sailors with indulgent haughtiness. No one seemed to take any notice, not even the other officers. He felt like a ninny just standing here waiting for something to happen. Perhaps he should shout out a command or two just to establish himself – but the thought that they would ignore it and leave him standing there looking like even more of an idiot stayed his voice. Ehh... looked like they knew what they were doing anyway.

Besides he had no orders from his captain. He hadn't even the slightest clue what the man was like, or how he ran his ship. He didn't know the man at all; had yet to even meet him. If he had, he doubted the Captain would've taken him on, even for all the favors the Admiral could grant. All he knew of them was the name – Captain Nehemiah, he thought it was, and that he was to report to him this day on the ship the 'Ascendance' for this mad cap voyage. Sterling prayed to Fate that they were a competent leader. To be truthful – the thought of working with pirates didn't terrify him nearly as much as the thought of a weak captain. He'd never served with pirates (that he knew of ) but he'd shared more then a few drinks and card games with them. They were not so very different from sailors – a little less concerned with hygiene, perhaps. But it was the thought of getting them to obey that made him take pause. They were an unruly lot, and not used to having any of their freedoms infringed upon. He greatly hoped with an experienced Captain at the helm that would not be too much of a problem.

The dark dire wolf lying next to her bonded looked up at him in curiosity. Her tails twitched as she tried to read what Sterling was thinking, but finding it impossible soon turned her attention back to scanning the deck. Moritz yawned – a halfhearted attempt to relax her jangled nerves. The wolf was impatient to be off, for she wasn't nearly as keen on this voyage as Sterling seemed to be. Joining a new ship was always an overly stressful time for the wolf. She put her head on her paws and let out a sigh. Unlike her bonded human she didn't take to meeting new people well, and she resented the fact that he kept being bumped from ship to ship. But that was Sterling. He was hopeless.

(You don't want to know how long this took me to write up. XP)
