Reza looked distant for a moment before deciding to answer Shahar with sorrow in his eyes. "Indeed." Was all he replied before turning away and working to pack. The sun had starting rising and they all knew it would soon be time to get moving.

Ren lay motionless while slowly retaining consciousness. His mind flickered in and out of focus like a dying flame, before finally taking hold and becoming clear. Slightly opening his eyes, he knew that his time like this was short. Fleeting thoughts caught up to him as he decided what to do next. He wanted to run, to escape, it was always the first thing he though whenever the bands control temporarily lifted. But running never worked and he would shortly lose control to the band again. Instead he shifted his body until he lay on his back to look at the puffy clouds that began to turn golden in the red and blue sky. Sunrises had always be his favorite.

_____________________

It wasn't long before the group discovered Ren's inability to leave an animal from. All he could do was swap one form for another, if the group needed an extra pair of eyes in the sky then Ren would touch Reza and two bat falcons would take flight. An extra nose and two wolves would prowl, Anita came in handy for hunting and Elwin for the days were walking was the main task. Ren spoke little and only did what was needed to keep the group going.

Two weeks of walking and the group became hopelessly lost. For as long as Ren was stuck as an animal the map, which sifted with him was of no use. It was around the fifth day of the third week and sixth time the had passed the clearing by the river that Ren had to confirm their status.

"We are lost." Ren chimed in as the group slowly walked the same path for the seventh time.

"You think?" Reza growled, ticked that Ren had waited this long to point out something so obvious.

Ren shrugged to Reza's response. "Well I was kinda hoping I would be able to be a human again by now and that perhaps without the map we could scour the area and by chance find the ruins. But this obviously didn't work, so any other ideas?"

Anita Belle Gunthner
The long trip brought little success but gave Anita lots. She would find excuses to be with Shahar alone, out of sight from Ray, and reunited with her long lost sister. They put the past behind them and made up for lost time. It was great to have her sister back. She wished things could be like that forever, but something told her otherwise.

As for Ren, whenever the two were out hunting, Anita couldn't help but remember the band that wrapped around his leg. She acted very distant to him, not wanting to trigger anything that could put her in danger. Yes she was more used to the body of a leopard and had more skill in that form than him, but he was much bigger and most likely stronger than her. With the chance that he could pin her down, there was no escape.

When with the rest of the group, Anita's mind was filled with thoughts. The main one being about the safety of her tribe with Ren now a bigger threat. Sure he had helped her so many years ago, but he was still the same man she had heard about from her teachers. His reputation worried her. But maybe he wasn't like they all thought. No. She couldn't let her feelings risk the safety of her tribe. She needed to stay focused. Wait. Feelings? Did she actually have feelings for the prince? No. That couldn't be. He was an elemental. His father was the king and he was a player.

That thought unintentionally brought a smirk to Anita's face. Her thoughts then shifted to the good times with the prince and the smile stayed. Her thoughts were interrupted by Ren stating the obvious. Truth be told though, she hadn't really noticed they were lost. She was preoccupied by other things that she hadn't realized where they were.

Hearing Ren speak again, Anita sniffed the air and looked around. They were close. Just not to the place they had in mind. Lucky for everyone, Anita knew the area well. She shifted back to her human form and continued looking forward.

"I know where we are," she spoke after a second of silence. "Follow me."

Anita started walking forward. She stopped a few meters ahead and turned around.

"Unless anyone has any other idea." Without waiting for anyone to respond or object, Anita continued forward. She would continue with or without them. If they didn't want to follow, they could go around in circles for eternity for all she cared.

After a while of walking, the sound of civilization became audible and soon enough, the village appeared with it. It was a quaint little place. Shack like homes of all sizes and businesses lined the criss-crossed streets, making for a winding trail. The cobblestone streets all lead the way to a large building on the outskirts of town.

Despite its size, the structure fit in with the rest of the place. The jungle feel that the rest of the village gave off was still present in the large building but it showed a status of power. Not a fearful power, but a warm, welcoming feel.

"Welcome to my home." Looking back at the group, the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. "I thought if I took you to a definite place we could find our way easier. And there is some business i must attend to. But first, come to my home. You all look like elementals. We must fix that."

      Shahar:
{Drawing her mare to a halt, Shahar barely succeeded in stifling an exasperated sigh as she gazed upon the all too familiar landscape. She too had noticed their circling path, and their lack of progress was fraying on her already short nerves. Although she chose to remain silent on the matter, her eyes glanced sharply around the clearing, waiting impatiently for the prince to choose their next course of action.

The dull throb in her hands and ache of exhaustion behind her eyes were also doing little to improve her irritability. Travel in the previous weeks had taken its toll and, even more so, the memories and fears of days past had returned to plague her nights. Pain still flared beneath her gloved hands each time she shifted them the wrong way, the minor injuries that remained hidden away a constant, physical reminder of the terror that had invaded her sleep as of late. Mere weeks ago she had been convinced that the nightmares, ones she had become quite familiar with in her youth, had ceased to a problem for her. Yet, it seemed as though Anita's sudden appearance had brought with it more than a few memories from her past.

Shahar had taken care to treat the small wounds, inflicted by her own curved nails as she apparently clenched her hands unconsciously in the night, in secret. If, somehow, anyone else in their group did know, none had questioned her about the matter; perhaps uneasy of her irritable attitude, she mused. In any case, if the past weeks had done any good, it was allowing for some time to reconcile with her sister. Finding some time away from the others, through late night watches and scouting, they had been able to speak and learn of the events that occurred since they had parted, nearly six years ago. Perhaps not the duo they once were as children, Anita's forgiveness was certainly never something Shahar had ever expected, but certainly found herself immensely grateful for.

Startled then by Anita's words, Shahar quickly scrutinized their surroundings. With a closer look the landscape managed to stir some degree of memory, vaguely reminding her of some time, some place. Even if her hunch was correct, though, surely Anita was not foolish enough to lead them all there...?

Unable to interrogate Anita of her plans so long as Ray and the others were around, Shahar scowled in silence as she turned her mare to follow the woman, pausing only long enough to take up the rear of their group. While partially done to keep a close watch for anyone attempting to trail them, uneasiness was also beginning to swell in her gut, her heart beginning to quicken on its own accord; emotions she dare not share with the others, lest they realize something was off. Ray, Owen, Darth, and Jharna were still unaware of her shifter nature, and she wasn't about to allow her reactions give away that secret. At the very least, riding in the rear would give her a few moments to compose herself.

Not long after, Shahar felt a a sickening twist as her fears were confirmed. Silently, she berated herself for such a response to the prospect of returning to her tribe. Was she not a soldier, one who had participated in many a fight with little more than a wisp of fear? Even so, as she rode forward donning an inscrutable expression, Shahar could feel the anxiety rise in her chest.

Two weeks out into feline territory meant traveling farther north than Gale had ever patrolled in the past. Most of the tribes had relocated into more remote forest, relinquishing the easy farming ground to the elemental settlements that sprang up along the main roads. Had their mission not been so urgent, he would have enjoyed the scenery more and fretted less about their lack of progress.

His hands healed enough to allow him to handle his daggers again, albeit clumsily at first when the grips rubbed over the old callus and the soft new skin. Although he was tempted to ask Shahar’s help in getting back up to fighting trim, he saw how she and Anita made opportunities to speak together away from the group and decided not to intrude on what little time they claimed for themselves.

Sparring with Ray was out of the question.

His nominal second was unpredictable and bent on either undermining him or proving her superiority whenever possible. Gale knew that to trust her for even an instant while he wasn’t entirely capable of defending himself would mean an even longer recovery than the group could afford. So he trained alone, instead.

The first attempts at controlling his newfound elemental connection were spectacular failures. He ended up in the dirt more often than not, either from misapplying his strength or the terrible pain that followed a wrestling match with his temperamental power. He took point on days when he wasn’t sure he could keep that curious energy from lashing out at the group, or when he needed time to practice without living people nearby.

Shahar bore the responsibilities of his title remarkably well, but he’d seen the cloud of tension growing over his third the farther they moved into feline territory.

When Anita announced that they had arrived at her home, his eyes flicked instantly to the place where her sister rode at the end of the group. Gale dropped back along the line with a casualness that wouldn’t broadcast his purpose.

“I’ll resume my title here,” he said softly.

And if we’re discovered, let the consequences be on my head.

Ren followed the group into the village, it was ironic really. Here they were just walking into what was left of the feline tribe, he could only imagine what Darius and his father would do given this opportunity. He noticed himself hungrily eyeing the village and stopped dead in his tracks. Why was he imagining burning the place to the ground? The realization of that thought made his stomach turn as a dizzying set of emotions overtook him.

He closed his eyes and focused on breathing, focused on one thought at a time. Ideas, commands, training all made thinking clearly hard and Ren found his anger rising to an uncontrollable level. Long meat hook claws dug deep into the wet dirt as he worked hard to keep following the group. Ears pinned back and tail flicking in frustration.

Anita's comment about them all looking like elementals almost made him laugh. For once in his life Ren had no fear of being found out. Or at least he would if he could get his head wrapped around his emotions.Memories of his last visit to the Feline tribe haunted him, stirring up more unwelcomed and overwhelming thoughts.

Anita Belle Gunthner
Looking back to her home she had left, a smile played upon her lips. She loved her homeland. Nothing in the world could beat the view and love of her own territory.

Looking down at Ren, Anita raised an eyebrow, thinking of how to deal with hiding an elemental who couldn't get out of a shifted form.

"Ren," she addressed the prince, "from here on out, you can not shift between forms. It will attract too much suspicion and panic. Stay in one form as long as it is not feline. That will arouse even more suspicion. As for the rest of you," she turned to the rest of the group, "let me handle all explaining. I know what can fool my people. Just follow my lead."

With a motion to follow, Anita lead the group towards the large building at the outskirts of town.

They did not pass through the village, but still ran into a few people who made their way to and from the village. Thankfully, they did not ask any questions and Ray kept her hood up to hide her elemental mark on her face. The people only welcomed their queen home.

Once they reached the courtyard in front of the castle, Anita stopped and motioned for a young man to come over. "Philip will take the horses and place them in the stables. We will retrieve them after we have finished here." After the boy had taken the horses from everyone and was startled by a shifting Elwin, the group entered the castle.

As they entered through the large front doors, torches lit up the area, revealing a beautiful entrance. Doors on either side closed behind them two hallways that lead to individual living spaces that were open to nature.

The cement floors were covered in colourful rugs. Directly on front of the entrance was a grand staircase that led up one story that curled around to form another level. Behind the staircase sat two doors. One entered a large kitchen area while the other led to an under-construction ballroom.

Anita slowly walked forward and stopped for a moment to take in the surroundings. Man was it good to be home. She was welcomed by a few of the residents and workers and they exchanged a few words before they went off again. Some even warmly welcomed the group that arrived with the queen before walking away.

"After the raid, I remodelled the castle a little. To fit my own tastes. Much of the castle was damaged in the raid and is still under construction. Lots of wings are closed down but the main building is still functional."

The tornado that ripped through during the raid had destroyed a bit of the castle but it still stood strong. When the villagers looked at the castle, it reminded them of the terrible times they experienced, but also show edit hem that no matter what happened, they would always stand strong.

"Anyhow. We must not delay. The sooner we get you all through unseen the sooner we will be on our way." Anita hastily led them up the stairs and to the second level.

The floor curved widely around the staircase and led to more rooms. Guest rooms. The second staircase led the same way as the first and the floor expanded the same as the second level.

Anita led them up yet another flight of stairs, to an area that only had three doors. It was larger than a normal area but still seemed odd to have only three doors. Anita's heart strings tugged as she saw them again. One room was the king and queen's bedroom while the other two were for descendants of the two. Four. The number her family started with. For so long only one had filled those rooms. Now it was up to two with Rachel home. But she knew that soon enough it would be back down once again.

She led them into the room on the far left and into the king and queen's suite. The room was large for a bedroom but was divided into two areas. One for the sleeping chambers and one for the restroom. A powder table and dresser sat in one corner.

The queen walked over to the dresser and shuffled through the clothing. She pulled out two of her dresses and placed them onto the bed.

"Shahar. Ray. You two put on these while I find the men some clothing." Anita stopped herself as she looked down at the small elemental and the long dress she had set out. "Um....Just remove any symbols of Beaugro you are wearing and put on this cloak." She tossed Ray the cloak she had been wearing and put away the dress. "Then use my powder table and cover up your birthmark. All of you."

Anita then walked over to another dresser and looked through its contents. She pulled out an outfit that wouldn't fit Gale but set it on the bed anyways. There was no clothing that would fit the small man, but it would have to do. It was a man's outfit but she hoped no one would realize or question it. Especially Rachel.

"Gale, here is one for you. My apologize with the size."

      Shahar:
{Shahar regarded Gale in silence as he joined her at the rear of their little procession.

"Of course," she replied quietly to his words, relinquishing the title with the same formal edge which she had accepted it with. It was a relief to know that Gale considered himself fit to resume his role- especially so now, with the unexpected visitation to her childhood home looming before them.

Even Anita's choice to avoid the main village could do little to quell her nerves. While it seemed doubtful she would be recognized, as even Anita had not seen through her guise immediately, it was simply seeing them again that was stirring old feelings of doubts and guilt. Aspen must have felt the change in her rider, for the mare refused to be quieted, even with Shahar's reassurances. It was a needed distraction, and Shahar focused on keeping the agitated mare in check as they passed the odd individual.

Anita led them to the heart to the feline settlement, to the castle itself. Home, Shahar mused with a wince of bitterness, eyes tracing the familiar building.

It looked much as it did when she had left, although areas of the walls and turrets had been fortified greatly since she had last seen the place. Although Shahar had not been present for the elemental raid all those years ago, likely the only fact that had kept her from facing the same fate as the rest of her family, she had been witness to the aftermath. The winds had cut through the defences easily, toppling what once had been believed to be a sturdy stronghold. True, not the entire castle had been decimated, but it had been enough.

As they entered the courtyard, Shahar dismounted to the uneven cobblestone ground, wordlessly handing over the reins to her mare. A soft chuckle at the stable boy's surprise indicated Elwin's return to his human form, though Shahar barely heard the sound. Her eyes were drawn to the stone fortress, to the castle she had lived in for nearly eighteen years. Waiting silently for Anita to take the lead, she again took to the rear of the group, allowing her to take in her old home without the scrutiny of Ray and the others.

Certain decor had been changed and replaced, Shahar noticed as they entered the grand entrance hall, but aside from that, the interior too was much like it had once been. The light played across the ornate floors and walls, and Shahar found she recognized several of the individuals that busied themselves with their various tasks. Their gazes slid across her without so much as a flicker of familiarity. After all, why should they see the features of a lost heir in the face of a stranger? The signs of her death -of Rachel's death- had been executed well. There was no need to search for one who was dead.

The determined calm that always overtook her during times of strife was beginning to break through the initial dread of returning to her birthplace, making it easier to pass through the hallways without the anxiety threatening to consume her. Shahar only faltered once more, ever so briefly, as they passed by her old room. A single glance at the gilded door, of the achingly familiar patterns that adorned its front, was nearly enough to draw her momentarily to a halt.

Then they were ushered into what Shahar still thought of as their parents' room, though she supposed it was Anita that bore ownership of it now. Although not particularly pleased with her sister's choice of outfit, knowing it was likely chosen for the sole purpose of annoying her, Shahar accepted it without a word. Even as she folded the fabric across her arm, however, she caught a glance at the clothing Anita handed Gale. Raising an eyebrow, she regarded her younger sister pointedly. Apparently there was something she had failed to mention.

Doing as Anita commanded Ren looked around at his options of shifters, if they were to be going into a building taking the form of a horse would be less then helpful. Falcons were known to be property of Beaugro, while he was sure a few had found freedom in the feline and canine tribes Ren didn’t want to chance it. Instead he strode over to Darth and brushed against the wolf’s forearm.

The confusion and nausea of changing shifter forms had lessened but was still enough to make Ren’s thoughts fuzzy for some time afterword. Despite the temporary confusion in his mind, he was able to keep up with the group. Before he knew it they had given up the horses and were making their way into the castle.

Sharp wolf senses scanned the room, it was a grand entrance. The castle was designed so nature could creep in and out of the building. He stood for a moment taking it all in, it was truly a beautiful place to call home.
“The heir has returned.” A voice hissed, hardly audible as the noise aimlessly echoed in the large room. “But they know not who they are or why they are here.” Ren spun in place trying to hear it better, wolf ears attentively swiveled around desperately to find the location of the speaker. “Oh but they must if we are to set things right, to break the cycle.”

“Ren?”

Darth’s voice made him jump, he noticed that everyone was making their way up the stairs. “Tis everyting alright?” Darth said quietly as to not call attention from the rest of the group, he worried that wolf senses may get the best of Ren again. Possibly drive him to run off or attack something.

“Yes fine, I thought I heard.” Ren stopped suddenly, he decided it was not wise to tell this group that he was hearing voices now on top of losing his fire power. What next? “Nothing, it was nothing.”

Darth’s expression showed he didn’t quite believe Ren, but he didn’t press. Ren kept thinking about the voice, what did it mean? It was a large room, there was a good chance he had heard the echoes of a conversation happening in another room. Perhaps he had completely made up the words, he decided to brush if off as a figment of his imagination.

He watched the group as they handed out clothes, he had no need for the fabric so began to walk around the room a little. His nose sniffed the old objects of the room, the glint of a golden spine on a book suddenly caught his eye. The sudden draw he felt for the book was strange, it almost called to him. Cocking his head he looked closely at the book. It had no writing on the spine and seemed to have a dark tanned leather cover. A layer of dust on it told him no one had picked it up in years.

A sudden noise in the room behind him called his attention back to the group. After listening to their conversation for a moment he was stunned to find a gap in the book shelf were the book had been standing just moments ago. Closing his eyes he shook his head and body as dogs do when attempting to dry off after a swim. What was going on? First he had been hear voices, now vanishing books.

He decided to just lay down for a bit, perhaps the shifting change was affecting his mind more than he had originally though. He plopped down next to Gale and placed his paws on his eyes his tale tucked tightly around his body. Just focus on breathing, he told himself trying to calm the now panicking feeling he was having.

Gale knew with certainty that a few miles south of the castle, now covered in undergrowth, lay the ashes of the town that his father had once garrisoned. Marion had not allowed his then-student to participate in the fighting. Gale had been assigned to a scout troop during the main part of the battle, instead, and then transferred to the burial detail at another word from the General. The look of the mass graves came to him unbidden, a memory so strong that he tasted ash and smelled blood beneath moss and spruce, green edged in iron.

He kept his ghosts to himself, reigning his horse along with a gentle hand and a steadiness to his seat because to do otherwise would be to leave his soldiers and his charges unprotected.

The air closest to his body thrummed with attention, skirting his hands and whispering to him about the land they traveled. No rain, it all but trilled, curling past his shoulder in a rustle. Where it tugged, he followed. Listened when it chattered. Released his hold and allowed it to come and go and borrow from his personal reserves as it liked. Became a channel for a power much greater than himself. In return it became a shield that he did not have to call, a willing scout, and a well of energy so vast that it made him giddy just to touch.

He knew, walking beneath the stone of the feline castle, that he could tear it apart from the turrets to the foundations even more thoroughly than his father had done.

Gale ignored those whispers and focused instead on trying to figure out how to make Anita's offered clothing workable. The shirt wasn't so bad, with sleeves short enough that they didn't roll over his wrists, though the hem was far longer than anything he'd ever owned or worn. He took one look at the breeches and relegated them to the level of 'lost cause.'

"The shirt will have to be enough on its own, Anita," he said. "I couldn't begin to fit the rest of it without tripping. "

He studied his own expression in Anita's vanity mirror. "The birthmark might also be the least of my worries at the moment," he added, distinctly unnerved. "I'll never be able to hide my eyes as they are." The familiar motes of gold had bleached farther, approaching a jewel-pale shade that glinted out at him from the blue with a fierce and wholly unexpected light. A shade of hammered metal even brighter than his father's.

Gale scratched behind Ren's ears without quite thinking about what he was doing, partly to ease his own nerves and partly because the Keystone hunting dogs would have rebuffed him for ignoring such an advance.

Anita Belle Gunthner
After giving everyone their clothes, Anita grabbed her own dress and gave Shahar a shrug before noticing just how big the clothes were on Gale.

"That should be good enough." She said as she made her way to the restroom, only stopping to listen to Gale once more. "We must do all we can to hide your true identities. Your birthmarks will be a quick giveaway but the eye flakes can be missed."

Without waiting for a response, Anita walked into the restroom and closed the door behind her. She sighed in relief once she entered, thankful for some privacy. She slipped off her current outfit and splashed herself with a small amount of water to freshen up. With a cloth, she cleaned the bits of dirt and sweat off herself before putting on her new outfit.

The dress was moss green with gold trim. Lime green patterns swirled their way up and down the skirt before coming together at the belt and spraying out in a bouquet of lines up the body. The sleeves cascaded down her arms with two holes on the upper part of her arm and only rested on her inside elbow with a thin strip of fabric. The neckline framed her neck in a delicate box. Anita wore pants underneath the skirt just in case.

With her clothing changed, Anita looked in the mirror to fix her hair. As she worked with each strand of her red hair, it gave her time to think about events. She was actually bringing elementals into her own kingdom. She was leading the enemy right into her home she lived to protect. She could even feel the tension in them when they entered. Gale had been acting strange recently and she wasn't sure if she could trust him in her home. Ray was definitely not one to trust so would need extra attention. Shahar was once them and could be trusted. But Ren. She didn't know what to think about him. Now that he could shift he was more uncontrollable than he was before. And that was saying something.

But no matter. They were already in, so she just needed to get them out before anything bad happened.

Once she was finished, her hair was pulled back into three small braids on either side that led into a swirled pony tail. It was simple and kept her hair out of her face.

After leaving the restroom, Anita walked over to her bed and sat on the edge of it, facing Ren.

"Does this not bring back memories?" She said as she stared out the window. "It is hard to imagine seven years have passed since we first met." She turned her attention to Ren. "I suppose eight as of today. A sorrowful day it is for my tribe. Every year we look back and remembered those who we lost and rejoice for those who survived. Although I suppose you do not care for that."

Looking into Ren's canine eyes, Anita almost forgot who he was. Nevertheless, he was still the prince and she didn't know what he was like. She didn't know if he had changed from when she first met him. But she just hoped he wasn't the man everyone told her about.
