Anikalo stood in astonishment that her own brother would be so naive as to actually grab the attention of two IAF officers. The exact people they were supposed to be running from. Kay noticed the boy speaking in a calm voice to Aralio. She too began to relax about the situation and felt light on her feet. Kay barely even noticed Aralio's fire dying down and flickering from time to time.

Finally, Anikalo realized what was happening and violently shook her head. She snapped out of the influence of the man's voice and knew his power. "Aralio! Don't listen to him!" It was no use. Her brother was distracted by the soothing voice of the newcomer and even began swaying.

"What's the problem Kay? Why not just pet your moustache and sit down?" he said in a lulled tone and giggled foolishly afterwards. Anikalo was furious at that point. She couldn't convince her brother to snap out of it, so she'd have to drag him out of it. A quick look to Demari was enough talk for him to know what to do.

Demari thrust out his hands, palms facing each other, and a giant beam of complete darkness shot from them. They quickly swallowed the alleyway and everything in it. Anikalo felt a hand grab her wrist and knew it was Demari. He quickly led her through the darkness, grabbing Aralio on the way. With Demari's excellent sight in his own darkness, they easily avoided the officers and raced deeper into the winding backroads. The darkness stopped at the end of alley so the group could easily make their way without the help of the older boy.

The man's power must have worn off, because Aralio was gladly running with them and didn't seem as relaxed as before. Shortly after, Rashcleigh came bounding out of the blackened alley, running right beside them.

{Tairad kept his eyes trained on the kids as he continued to speak in low, soothing tones. The Intergalactic Armed Forces Academy required several courses in diplomatic negotiations, and not surprisingly, he had come out on top of each them. With voice alone, Tairad's powers allowed him to subdue civilians and criminals alike; a convenient gift in his field of work, although a frequent nuisance to his fellow officers. His charm and charisma paired with this gift, however, had managed to work himself and numerous partners -most notably Viera- out of several rather vexatious predicaments.

Still, even with his powers, the girl's insistence broke through the calm that had settled briefly over the alleyway. Although attempting to push his powers deeper, extending his emotional influence, it was not enough; the girl -Kay, was it?- had become aware of his trickling power, and with that awareness came the slamming down of emotional guards. While the boy's, Aralio's, words made little sense, Tairad caught the glint of desperation in the girl's voice. There was obviously some sort of strong bond between the two, that much he caught from their interaction. Family, perhaps? He had little time to contemplate this possibility, however, before the alleyway was plunged into complete darkness.

Tairad felt a wisp of wind brush past him as a solid shape rushed past him, and tensed in preparation for an attack. Rather, what he assumed to be the Dion simply disappeared, swallowed into the darkness along with the kids. The next moment he was aware of Viera at his elbow, the tendrils of darkness flickering away in the presence of sunlight, leaving the alleyway as silent and empty as usual.

Neither officer said anything as they shared a dumbfounded look, not quite sure what to make of that particular interaction. While persons of authority, their goal was to protect the general public, certainly not pose as any kind of threat to them. What had caused their panicked nature? That kind of edginess went beyond any sort of petty crime.

"Well," Viera said with a dry sigh after a few moments of silence, eyes fixed on the direction the kids had disappeared to. "I suppose we found our bread thief."

{Viera hurried down the hallway of the Intergalactic Armed Forces main building, navigating the weaving corridors with ease. Today, of all days, was not the time to be late. She rounded yet another corner, drawing to a quick halt after almost colliding with a cluster of officers that were milling around the outside of the Situation Room. The cause for such distress was a particular disturbing development regarding the... Well, whatever it was that had managed to grip the galaxy in icy terror. Of course, there was no direct evidence relating it to the uneasy presence that had managed to spread from planet to planet, possessing no name to describe its baffling, and rather controversial, existence, but the unusual nature of the fatality had all questioning its cause. As of yet, Viera had failed to hear any concrete details regarding the case, but the building had been abuzz with rumours when she had arrived.

Shouldering herself through the crowd, she passed through the automated doors and caught Tairad's eye. He had managed to find a place along the side of the room, reserving a chair beside him for her. Flashing him an appreciative glance, she settled into the chair and glanced to the front of the room. Commander Ronan Kerr himself presided over the conference table, steely grey eyes glowering at each of the officers until silence filled the room, none daring to so much as whisper under his unwavering gaze. It was only then that he gave a rigid nod to Major Erez at his side to begin the debriefing.

All eyes fell to Major Erez as he took the stage, clearing his throat once before speaking out clearly. "At approximately 0700, the body of a middle-aged man was found in an alleyway adjoining Daytonna Avenue. As of yet, he remains unidentified. No apparent signs of struggle marked the body, and our medical staff has not yet identified any cause of death. Until further evidence is collected, we are carrying out the investigation as a suspected murder."

For the following quarter of an hour, Major Erez continued to recite facts, figures, and theories regarding the investigation- of which, there were currently alarmingly few of. Viera listened intently, occasionally sharing a dubious glance with Tairad. As the meeting progressed, she couldn't help as her mind wandered to the kids they had encountered only last week. She hardly suspected they could be capable of murder, but the chance meeting still weighed on her mind. What had they been afraid of? Viera supposed that it may just have been a fear of being taken in by the authorities, if they were orphans, but there were numerous lies that could have been woven to ward off the officers attention. Without solid proof, the two likely couldn't have taken any action anyway. Even the stolen bread would have warranted little more than a stern warning, given their age. Yet, they had reacted with such fear and hatred towards herself and Tairad...

Neither of them had mentioned the incident when they returned to the IAF building. Perhaps against regulations, but Viera had not been in the mood to launch an investigation against a few kids that appeared to just be trying to get by. Allowing a casual mention of the encounter to slip by to fellow officers, lightly suggesting they keep an eye out for the trio during their rounds had not been beyond her, however, but had yet to yield any results. No one else had managed to spot them. The kids, and their Dion, had vanished just as easily and quickly as they had in that brief moment they had met.

Major Erez wrapped up his debriefing now, dismissing the officers congregated there. The shuffling of chairs and feet filled the room as everyone began to clear the room, murmuring quietly amongst themselves as they took their leave. Tairad and Viera hung back for a few more moments to avoid the crowded mass, silently contemplating these new developments. When they, too, rose to make their way back to their respective offices, they were halted by a gruff voice calling their names.

Viera turned towards the voice curiously, recognizing the individual immediately. Ronan Kerr; the infamous IAF commander, and a long time friend of her late father. She'd known the man long before she joined the IAF, and despite him now being her commander, he still managed to bring up warm memories of her deceased family. He had been the closest thing to a guardian Viera had had when her father had died, when she was merely seventeen years old...

"Yessir?" Viera and Tairad responded simultaneously in turn, snapping the thoughts from her mind.

"You two are with me," Ronan replied simply, striding toward the door as the two officers fell in step behind him. "We're going to do a little investigating around Daytonna Avenue, see if we can't scrounge a bit more evidence for this case."

      --------

Five hours later, Viera found herself striding down the specified alleyway along Daytonna Avenue, the signature IAF equipment obstructing the view from prying, public eyes. Amos trotted gleefully at her side, enjoying his time out of the house and aiding in the investigation. Viera ran a frustrated hand through her short hair, studying the area for the upteempth time. It had been precisely how the earlier report had described it, devoid of any signs of struggle and evidence. Between the three of them, they had been unable to discover even the faintest hint of evidence, and the IAF's medical team was still having difficulty finding a cause of death. Even Amos had failed to pick up a scent. Several hours later, and Viera felt they had spent the entire morning simply pacing in circles.

With a sigh, Viera cast a glance down the street and suddenly perked up as she caught a familiar sight. There, across the street, was that a Dion head peeking from the darkened alleyway...?

After the little incident with the IAF officers, the trio of kids were a little more alert. Their daily rituals were the same though, simply roaming through the streets. Anikalo was certain they had searched and remembered every single alley in the city. It came in handy when they needed to escape. Rashcleigh had been wandering from the group as usual, returning every once in a while to check in.

Kay walked through the alleys with her two boys, attempting to find a pass time for her restless brother. He had been nagging her all day for something to do but it was hard to find activities when you had nothing. He had driven her to the point where she was so close to trapping his feet in the ground, leaving him for whatever came.

As they passed a dumpster, an old bicycle lay rested against the metal container. The only thing wrong with it that bike was a missing handle bar and a broken chain.

"Looks like it's your lucky day Aralio," Kay spoke up as she walked over to the bike. "Can you help me out here?" she said as she tied her hair back into a high ponytail. Aralio bobbed over to his sister and touched the part she pointed to. His hand began turning red, heating up the metal chain and welding the two parts to each other. He then moved to the handle after Kay had found the missing piece.

Once the bicycle was fixed, Aralio leaped onto the seat and wobbled forward. He had learned to ride a bike when he was younger, but after not doing so for many years, he had gotten a little rusty.

The trio trio continued forward, passing through many streets and alleyways, following the happy boy and his trike. Ash sauntered behind the group but stopped after passing an alley that led to the street. She sniffed the air before looking back at the entrance. Creeping towards the corner, Ash poked her head around, looking straight at the IAF. A low growl emanated from her throat as she stared down the officers. Once the girl from the previous encounter looked right at her, Ash turned around and jogged towards the group, giving a low but quiet bark to warn them.

The group turned their heads to see their Dion racing towards them and knew something was up. Kay and Demari picked up their pace, falling into step with Aralio who had become steady and fast on his bicycle.

{The Dion's head flickered away just as quickly as it had appeared, but Viera had no doubts about what she had just seen. Amos, too, had apparently witnessed the brief appearance, as he stood stiffened and alert at her side, uttering a low growl in the back of his throat. A quick scan around her told Viera none of her fellow officers had noticed the rouge Dion, as busy and frustrated they were with the current case. With a few more moments of searching her eyes finally came to rest onto Tairad, speaking in low tones with a few members of the medical staff, just down the block. Throwing a glance over her shoulder every few strides in case the Dion happened to appear again, Amos following obediently at her heels, Viera waited impatiently for Tairad to finish talking. When at last he did, she dragged him rather unceremoniously away from earshot. He offered no complaint, but shot her a rather bewildered glance.

"What is it?" he asked once Viera drew them to a halt, brows furrowed in confusion.

"Remember that Dion we followed last week?" Viera replied under her breath, eyes fixated on the alleyway across the street. She paused only long enough for Tairad to nod in confirmation before adding, "Well, I think we have company."

His eyes followed her gaze, but seeing nothing, he turned back to Viera. "They're here? Are you sure?"

"I think so," Viera replied, eyes never wavering. "That Dion of theirs was here, just a few minutes ago. That much I do know."

      "Should we tell someone?"

Viera shook her head at this in answer. "No. There are more important matters here, and I have a feeling that bringing in some more officers would only spook them more. You saw how they reacted when they saw who we were. If, however," Viera added slyly, cocking an eyebrow, "just I were to take a quick look around there, perhaps it wouldn't be so bad. No harm in checking, right?"

"And you should be the one to go, because...?" Tairad asked with a sigh. "Last time I checked, I was the one with the ability to influence emotions."

"Yes, an ability they now know about," Veira reminded him. "Which means they're less likely to trust you. They'll be gone before you can get within ten feet of them."

Tairad scowled, but conceded with a frustrated sigh. "Alright, alright, point taken. Just keep in contact, alright? And don't take any risks."

"I'm sorry, are you suggesting I'm incapable of dealing with a couple of kids," Viera snorted derisively at his concern. "I'll be fine; besides, I'm not going completely alone. I'll have Amos with me."

The Dion at her side perked up at his name, golden eyes carefully watching the two. "See you soon," she added with a wink, and then pulled away from Tairad before he could interject. Without hesitation she strode across the street, Amos padding along at her side. With cautious curiosity she entered the alleyway, empty hands held before her to emphasize her lack of weapon. Although unable to see any figures through in the dim light, Viera was suddenly aware of the dull thuds of footsteps fading away. It seemed that who ever was here had become aware of her presence, and was running- again.

Perhaps it would have been wiser to turn back then, but with Viera's curiosity peaked, she took no hesitation before surging forward. Amos didn't miss a beat, and was immediately loping at her heel. It took only a few seconds until the trio came into sight, the elder two jogging while the third was riding what appeared to be a rather run down bike.

"Hey- kid!" Viera called at their backs, her long strides slowing as she approached them. "I don't want to hurt you, I just want to have a quick talk. Alright?"

As they raced down the alleys, twisting and turning through them, Anikalo heard a voice behind them. Turning around, she saw the same girl from a few weeks ago following them. Kay became furious. Why was she following them? What did she want from them? The answers could only be found if they stopped running and allowed the girl to talk. But why would they stop? They've been running from that exact group the majority of their lives! Why give in now?

That specific officers didn't seem to know who they were though. The ones who did know them often acted differently. Anikalo slowed to a stop and turned to face the other girl.

"What do you want from us!" She yelled down the alley, her voice stern. With those few words, she let everyone know she didn't want to be disturbed and if she did, bad things would happen to those around her. "Can't we all just go our separate ways with no disturbance from either party? What do we have to do to get a little privacy?"

Behind her, Aralio was coming to a slow stop on his bicycle while Demari had practically foreseen her movements and was right beside Kay. Swirling around Demari's hands were two clouds of darkness, poised and ready to strike if the situation called for it.

{Finally getting somewhere, Viera slowed her pace and came to a halt just a few feet from where the kids stood. Spreading her empty hands wide to emphasize her lack of weapon, she looked from one person to the next, silently taking note of each of their details in case she was needed to identify them after this meeting. Given how they had reacted thus far, she wouldn't put it past them to run again. A sudden growl emanated from behind her as her Dion approached, bristled and ready for action.

"Amos," she warned lowly, giving the Dion a glare from the corner of her eye.

Immediately the growling was cut short, and Amos padded sullenly to her feet, his golden eyes flickering first to her and then to the unfamiliar individuals.

"Don't try it," Viera warned as she spied the darkness swirling around the eldest's hands. "Amos here is attune to light. He can summon it at will. I don't imagine even conjured darkness will be able to extinguish that."

As if to prove a point, the Amos gave a huff and in front of his muzzle a dazzling light condensed into existence. It was a rather feeble display of his power, but Viera hoped that, in combination with her words, it would ward off any attempt to plunge the alleyway into darkness.

"Look," she began diplomatically, though a hint of a sigh touched her words. "In case you haven't noticed, there have been some weird things going on in the city lately. The IAF is stretched thin, but it's our job to be thorough. Our main priority is protecting our citizens, and right now you lot are just a bit of a concern for us. We just wanted to ask you a few questions and make sure you're alright, ok? Not too unreasonable?"

As she waited patiently for their response, Viera took note of the slight vibration along her arm, an indication that someone was attempting to contact her through her wrist communicator. Keeping her eyes fixed on the individuals in front of her, she ignored it. After all, it was likely only Tairad, attempting to check up on her. The thought nearly caused her to roll her eyes in exasperation. For an officer that had a reputation for being among the most fearless and gung ho on the force, he worried way too much.

The girl was too close to Kay for her comfort and she took a step back. In response to the woman's Dion's growl, Ash stepped up beside Kay and growled back. Her growls stopped when the other one's did but she kept her body rigid and her stare firm.

Behind Ray, Demari tried to resist and keep his power ready, but saw there was no chance in that trick working again. The darkness dissipated but his hands were still clenched into fists.

As the woman talked, Anikalo stood, arms crossed, and glared at the girl. She didn't want to talk to the girl but knew they would have to at some point. They had already bumped into her twice in one week. Who was to tell how long they would be safe from them.

"Sure! Why not!" Kay said overly excited. "Pull up some chairs! I'll get the tea started." Her face went from sarcastic happiness back to her natural stare. "There's always weird things happening in this dump. What's so special this time?"

Kay hadn't taken much interest in the welfare of others and never noticed when something happened in the city. If there was a murder, she would pass by. If there was a robbery, she would chuckle. There wasn't anything that didn't involve her or her family that would attract her concern.

{If nothing else, at least they had finally stopped running. Casting a cautious eye over the group of kids, Viera mind raced as she attempted to determine the simplest way to carry out such a procedure. Quite obviously, they bore no love toward the IAF; although, what exactly had prompted such a dramatic reaction toward them was beyond her.

The swirling darkness had dissipated from the eldest male's hands, providing mild relief. Still, they were not completely unarmed. The Dion patrolling their side, the very same one that a mere week ago herself and Tairad had found themselves trailing, was a concern of it's own. Apparently rather loyal to them, Viera had little desire to tamper with the animal's temper. Certainly, a point blank shot from a stun gun would down it without doing any further harm, such an act would surely shatter the fragile veil of compliance the kids had allowed for the time being.

"I'm going to take that as a yes," Viera replied with thinly veiled sarcasm, doing her best to curb her cynicism and prevent any further conflict.

While the girl's response hardly constituted as a consent to her proposal, it seemed as though it was the best she was going to get. The kids were spooked; that much she could tell, and there was little Viera could do to soothe them. They were liable to flee at any given moment, and with this in mind, Viera began to speak the only thing that came to mind; the cold, blunt truth of the matter.

"We have absolutely no idea- that's what so special about it," Viera began frankly. "Usually there's evidence, a trail, something to follow. Few evade the authorities for long, and we always have some sort of link, whether that be a name, suspect, address- anything along those lines. Yet, with these recent cases... There's nothing; nada, zilch."

Settling a meaningful glare on the group, she added, "If you fail to grasp the significance of that, then allow me to tell you. If we can't find anything, then we can't do anything about it. And if that happens," Viera continued pointedly, "then we all have something to be concerned about, now don't we?"

Kay listened closely to the woman speak but kept her face straight. She really didn't care if the IAF couldn't figure something out. It still wasn't harming her family so why should she care?

"So I'm assuming you're talking about murder?" Kay said bluntly. The girl didn't exactly clarify what had been going on in the city but what she had said made Kay think of that. It wasn't unnatural for that incident to occur in the city but it was unusual for there to be no evidence. Being the daughter of two former officers, she knew quite a bit of the average case in the IAF. She even knew a thing or two about special cases as well.

After a short pause, Kay sighed and closed her eyes. "You may have a chance of getting our cooperation," she said, actually sounding normal. "But tell me this. Give me one good reason why we should come with you?"

The girl would have to give her an incredibly good reason for her to go with her. She didn't want to go back to the IAF but a little spark of hope arose in her that offered a chance to feel their parents again.
