Luke was somewhat familiar with serpent history, though felt that payment was just regardless. A friend of his fathers had on rare occasions given free venom to close friends and family, Luke once being one of her charges, the idea wasn’t new even if Luke didn’t fully understand the gesture.

Nodding he remained silent for a time, lowering his gaze and focusing on breathing. Idris’s heart beat calmly next to him, relaxing he counted the three sparks that kept the organ active. Sets of three until his own heart slowed to a resting pace.

“I am afraid I will keep on thanking you, even if you don’t need me to.” His words whispered into the space between them. “It’s hard not to thank someone when you’re grateful.”

"I suppose I can let it go this time," he said, drinking in the dark and stillness of the room in an effort to settle the roiled flow of his thoughts.

His words on patience had been as much for himself as for Luke. When there's no time to look before the leap, Ravi had cautioned him, it had better be one hell of a jump. Which Idris supposed was his stepfather's way of saying that any worthwhile risk should be undertaken only if he was prepared for the effort.

He didn't even have to wonder what Ravi would say about courting a man widely considered the most unstable and deadly of the greater elementals. 'We'll be lucky to get a body to bury,' he'd quipped. 'Assuming the falcons are kind enough not to skin you first.' These observations he kept to himself.

"I may have to slip away for a few hours tomorrow," he said, instead, without other explanation. Better that Luke not know where, or with which agents he might be meeting.

“Work?” Idris had spoken of his transfer earlier. “You know flimsy tents are not common interrogation sites in Faypine, I would be hard pressed to break you out as easily this time around.”

Idris’s capture in the southern most parts of Faypine had been well within Luke’s control. General Kern’s temper paired with the shabby military tents had made the escape seamless. The same could not be said for Faypine’s prisons. Designed to prey on men’s deepest fears, falcons had drugged up the walls of purgatory.

Luke had walked the torch lit halls on two occasions, once as a tool brought to fish out information, the other as a captive. Surprisingly little memory remained of his time in captivity, enduring the cold stone and suffocating darkness. Be it suppressed or perhaps overshadowed by greater events, never the less it was not a place he wished to return.

Luke knew all too well the penalties Idris would face if caught. The only way out of a falcon prison is escape or postmortem.

“May I make an offer?” A rhetorical question. “I have free reign of Faypine, allow me to escort you to your desired location. I will drop you off and linger around the general area to be sure of your safety. You go unseen and I know you’re not playing hooky unnecessarily with the local guards.”

Luke offered a fond smile at Idris that accompanied his request.

"Have a little faith," Idris said, with the feeling that he should be vaguely offended. "If they find me here, then I deserve to be caught. Free to move or no, you're still famous enough to draw every eye. I need to avoid the attention and you trying to meet me or keep a watch is only going to make this more dangerous for both of us."

He eyed Luke narrowly.

"I suggest a compromise. I allow you to get me past the guards between the upper and lower levels. You spend a few hours courting Lydia like you're actually intending to fulfill expectations. I'll meet the both of you when I can after that. Lydia and I already have signals arranged."

Luke struggled to not argue the point with Idris. It was all too tempting to remind the serpent of his previous blunder or to challenge his denial of Luke’s escort farther. Letting out a long breath he watched the man next to him, considering his choices as he did.

“I don’t like it.” Luke felt he owned Idris for the venom and even more for his patents. If this was a way to show any level of thanks, how could he rightly fight?

“If you get caught…” Luke paused to shake the thought. “You won’t, you escaped Keystone once. You know what you’re doing.” The stamen was for his own comfort more than anything. “Just please don’t get caught.”

No time to explain to Luke that this was not his first trip to Faypine, nor his first infiltration. His moving into the forest as Lydia's pet was more convenient a protection for her as a noncombatant, though it put him at greater risk of discovery. There were caches of tree-climbing gear stored in the homes of informants and it was easy enough to pass as a hobbyist testing his skills as long as he kept his black scales covered.

The stretches of the great Swan Trees reserved for just such recreational pursuits were rarely open to elementals in the first place, as some of the routes passed close to what he suspected were old religious sites or ancient falcon dwellings preserved in the inner wood of the tree, either carved long ago or, as he liked to imagine, fully grown over and around as the size increased.

Idris settled in closer to Luke with the sensation of submerging himself in pleasantly warm water.

"If you follow me, I'll string you up by your thumbs."
