His 18th Birthday


It had been 4 long years of hell. And today was the worst day yet.

Riley was about to be 18. It would have been great except for one thing.

4 yrs ago, a virus had swept across the world and everyone 18 or above was infected and only the children had been spared. If 'spared' would be the correct word. The virus had turned the ones it infected into monsters. Zombies.

Riley had been 14 when the virus had struck and he still remember that morning when his little brother had died and his parents tried to kill him.

He had been upstairs when he heard a loud thump. He had run downstairs to see what had happened. What he saw, he could never forget.

His mom had sat in the middle of the room holding his brother's arm. On the other side of the room, partially hidden by their enormous brown sofa was the rest of his brother, dismembered and missing one of his legs. His mouth was still opened in a silent scream.

Riley stood there, watching his mom eating his 11yr old brother's arm. The same mom that tucked them into bed. Kissed their head every night before they went to bed. The one that had drawn a smiley face with frosting on his pancake that morning. He would have probably stood there forever when his father entered the room.

"DAD!" He screamed. "MOM'S GONE CRAZY. DONT GO NEAR HER!"

His dad turned to him with a vacant gaze and Riley saw that he was holding a leg.

That was when he ran.

And now it had been 4 yrs. He had never seen his parents again though they haunted his dreams. And always in his dreams he would be stuck, unable to move and his parents would move closer and closer and he would be the one lying on the floor in pieces.

Riley didn't want to become what his parents had become. He didn't even know if the virus was inside of him or out there somewhere, just waiting to strike when he was 18. He really hoped it was gone because he'd rather die then turn into one of those monsters.

The sun rose.

It was Riley's 18th birthday.

~Without You, What Am I?~
"Say something," he begged, holding his best friend's hand, which was stuck through of tubes because he couldn't eat by himself. Troy wanted to rip those stupid things out of Derek.

"He might never wake up." Those were the first words the doctor had told him. "And even of he does, theres no knowing the damage that has been done to his head. He might not be the same person you remember. Troy wanted to rip that knowing, sympathetic smile from his face. "It would be humane to just pull the plug, instead of dragging it out painfully."

Troy gasped. "Are you saying we should let him die?" His voice kept rising. "He's going to wake up. You don't know him like I do. He's going to wake up." As if repeating the words over and over would make them real. "Just give him a month." The doctor sighed. "If the parents agree."

It had been a month. "Oh god, please Derek. Wake up you idiot." Derek's face blurred as Troy cried. "I don't want to give up on you..." Not when Derek had never given up on him.

Beep...beep...

The only sounds in the room was the whirrs and beeps of the machinery and Troy's own ragged breathing.

How had all this happened so fast? It seemed like just yesterday when they had just been two kids goofing around. Now here they were.

Derek's parents came in with the doctor. Derek's mom's eyes were downcast and puffy and red from crying. "I'm sorry Troy sweetie. We tried but..."
"No please," Troy begged. "Please, just another month." "I'm sorry.."she whispered. "You should leave..." "NO!'' Troy screamed, fighting the arms trying to carry him out of the room, fighting to get back to Derek. They pulled the plug.

Beep...beep...beep..............

Derek breathed his last.

And the only sound in the room was Troy's screaming.
