Spirits of the dead exist, lingering on by memories of the living. The most common to be found are those that have died an unnatural death, for those without grudge have long since passed. These ghosts typically hold grudges against the living, but are mostly harmless apart from their tendency to turn a person's luck sour. However, when the veil between the realm of the living and that of the dead thins, the dead can cross over. During those times, the people will leave out food and gifts for the dead to appease and honor them in the hope that they would not trouble the living.

Despite this, not all spirits are so easily appeased. Malicious spirits, full of resentment and hatred tend to torment any unlucky person's life, slowly driving them into madness. This very ability has made them popular with certain folk, who have come up with ingenious ways to use them to do their dirty work. The promise of having an immortal, if vengeful, spirit as your protector and companion is an alluring thought to some, no matter the consequences.

Their very presence was discovered from the mad ramblings of a scholar who dabbled in the occult. He went missing shortly after, but fanatics continued his work secretly to discover the truth behind his words.

If a single being is known as a Somnium, then a group, usually consisting of two or more Somniums would be known as an Insomnium. Aptly named, as multiple presences of these unnatural forms will cause even the summoner themselves to slowly degrade into insanity. Vile nightmares and horrid visions will plague those whom dare to tamper repeatedly with the arcane, which is why only one of these creatures can be owned at any point of time by the living.

Despite being grouped as a 'species', these beings are anything but similar. Each Somnium differs in temperament, figure and even diet at times. What few 'similarities' are minor and superficial, ranging from their signature masked faces to how they are summoned into existence. Perhaps the ingredients, intent and will of the owner differs, but the method is still the same - and that is all that counts.

One thing that scholars have noted in their research of these intriguing beings is the fact that they all hold some sort of keepsake from their previous life. Majority hold intricately designed lanterns on their extraordinarily limber tails to lure their chosen targets, but those Insomnium with stronger spirits tend to hold a unique momento that lingers upon their demise. Such objects can fetch a pretty penny for any aspiring collector or arcanist.

Their age is hard to tell due to the great variations in each subject, but general consensus is that the longer the tail, the older the Somnium in question. Gauging a Somnium's age by their tail is the most popular method many have used and swore by it. It is easy to see why. Just by looking at a Somnium's tail, one can easily judge the spirit's health, mood and even value at times.

Humans are fickle creatures, ignoring and discarding their former companions at the drop of a hat for a 'better model'. Like how one disposes of their unwanted goods, these Somnium have been abandoned and are left broken as a result.

Their already battered souls cannot handle the sheer stress, causing their masks to crack and what minuscule amount of trust that was once between its former owners to be void. This weakens them severely as their masks were mean to block the light from reaching their faceless souls...

Rumours claim that any Somnium abandoned twice will disappear forevermore into the abyss, leaving nothing but a shell behind. But rumours are rumours, so do take them with a grain of salt.

Will you take the chance to care for them?
