Backstory
Born to an absent Avian father and a doting human mother, Lucius had an interesting upbringing. He is an emotional being, even if he doesn't show it, and as a child his transformations were frequent and painful. Bullying from his classmates at school only compounded this issue, and he was kept home so much that his mother eventually took him out of school and used family money to find private tutors.
In late grade school, one tutor in particular sparked Lucius' interest in zoology. The learning was hands-on instead of from a boring book, and tests were visual and interactive. Lucius flourished. His mother brought the tutor back for several years, eager to encourage her son who had his passions stripped from him by his peers and his conflicting physiology. The boy never wanted for tools and equipment: his mother bought him microscopes, spreading boards, display cases, and all sorts of materials for preserving specimens. Relatives and family friends often brought him interesting finds from their journeys or from their own collection, hoping to help him along. All of his specimens were ethically procured, he made sure--the cruelty from his peers only softened his heart to the suffering of other creatures.
While he studied zoology, his magical abilities began to surface. He channeled his desire to help the animals he loved so much by learning healing magic. By the time he was 14 he could cast basic spells and mend flesh and bone, though he had a long way to go.
But a dazzling collection and magical proficiency couldn't ease his loneliness. The Hadley manor was very large and very empty, and he had no friends to visit. Everyone that managed to get over his strange eyes would run screaming once Lucius inevitably slipped up and transformed. He'd see them later when he went to market with his mother, teasing him from across the street with the same group of children that bullied him in school.
He often took long walks in the woods around his home, picking up any interesting finds. One day he chanced upon a boy crying over a heap of fur. It was a dire wolf, its leg badly injured from a hunter's snare, and the boy begged Lucius to get help. Lucius healed the dire wolf enough to take it back to his "lab" for further rehabilitation. Over the course of the animal's convalescence, the two boys became close friends--real friends, this time. Florian (whom you may have guessed it was) was fascinated by Lucius' collection and showed only concern for his friend the first time Lucius transformed in front of him. The two remain together today, still friends...and then some.

CompanionMephistopheles--conveniently shortened to "Meph"--is
not blood bonded to Lucius, who avoids attempting blood bonds for fear of bringing the bonded animal pain and stress. However, Meph is very closely attuned to Lucius, almost as if the griffin himself imprinted on the halfborn. Maybe it's because they're both bird-types. Maybe it's the fact that Luce always has a seed and honey treat in his pocket. Whatever the reason, this particular griffin has taken a liking to the homestead's caretaker, and will often give Lucius special things he finds. (He does an adorable little dance of pride whenever Lucius takes the item from his beak.) Meph also serves another purpose: because he is so closely linked with Lucius and is sensitive to fluctuations in magic and his companion's emotions, the griffin will try to calm Lucius down if he's too close to a transformation. This doesn't happen so often now, but if something sets him off the griffin will literally break a window to snuggle him. It's a very sudden and confusing thing to anyone watching (except Florian, who just gets upset at all the broken glass he has to clean up), but Lucius is grateful.

"Helper"No one.....really knows where Harriet came from. Florian thinks she crawled out of the sea, because he does
not remember bringing her home. She's made herself at home in Lucius' loft and splits her time between "helping" him--dragging tools across the room when he doesn't need them, laying on papers, eating insect specimens, knocking things over--and returning to the sea to do whatever she does there. She always comes back though, and despite her antics Lucius is fond of her goofiness.
