{Humankind may have been born on Earth, but that was never where it was destined to die. Although perhaps once confined to the planets' surface, that has long ceased to be the case. The future has heralded numerous advancements in technology and with them the ability to access previously unknown worlds. Thousands of years have passed since humans first step foot off their world, and since then have spread and populated across every corner of the galaxy. Aliens, as they have previously been known as, have now become an integrated part of everyday life. Countless cultures have collided, and somewhere within the chaos, have found the will to coexist peacefully. This fact is true for most societies, at least. Danger still lurks in this vast universe, many questions remaining unanswered.

With these advancements also came great discoveries, one of which was a race known as the Glacerion. Humanoid beings, they were born with capabilities that rivaled the imaginations of even the most creative of science fiction writers. Each was bestowed with unique abilities from the moment they were born, no two exactly alike. Rather astonished at humankind's lack of power, the two species became quite fascinated with one another. In time, though, the humans mingled with the Glacerion, combining the two different species together to create even more powerful kin. Their offspring, blessed with both vast knowledge and extraordinary powers, became prosperous driving forces within the galaxy throughout the years that followed.

Oscelane, a large terrestrial planet on the outskirts of the milky way galaxy, has since become a central hub of activity. Dominated by its capital city, Gralune, it is one such planet that has been affected greatly by these hybrid humans. Home to millions of individuals, what makes this city most notable is the housing of the IAF headquarters- the Interstellar Armed Forces. This elite force acts as law enforcement for affairs across the galaxy. From simple parking tickets and public disturbances, to illegal trading and murders, the IAF handles it all. While many view a position within the force as nothing short of elite, there are some who do not look upon these officers with quite the same fondness...

Despite the peace and prosperity that has touched this planet and neighbors for so long, uneasiness has begun to stir. The cause of it bears no name, no description beyond the icy terror its grip bestows. Rumors of entire planets succumbing to this eerie presence have already begun to spread, doing nothing to ease the infectious fear seizing the people of Oscelane. Frantic for answers, many turned to the government, only to find that they too were at a loss. While officials have done their best to ease the worries of the planets' citizens, there remains one thing they have failed to provide; clear explanations. Rumors have already formulated and spread at an alarming rate. Could this mysterious being be a new species, malevolent and bent on domination? A spectral creature from the world beyond? Or, something else entirely?

Whatever the case, there are some who have turned to the old texts to gain explanations for these strange happenings. In particular, an ancient legend regarding a creature known simply as the Snaloo. While a unique creature, there are no two texts that seem to be able to describe it in the same way. One recounts it as a vile draconian beast, paving a path of destruction wherever it went. Another, a light hearted genie that granted wishes to those deemed worthy. Yet another describes this being as an incessant riddler, never giving clear answers to those that sought it out. Despite the deviations in each story, there seems to be one detail they all agree on; the Snaloo was, or perhaps still is, a powerful being with powers that surpassed even the Glacerion masters. It can be understood why such a legend has managed to inspire hope throughout Oscelane's population, but does the creature they speak of even exist? And even if it did, could it ever be persuaded to provide aid?

Additional Information

Postby Manx » Fri Aug 15, 2014 12:48 am

Oscelane:: An earth-like planet located within the Milky-Way galaxy, this area is inhabited by numerous species. From various humanoids to flourishing flora and fauna, it is a vast world driven by a careful balance of technology and natural beauty.

Gralune:: As Oscelane's bustling capital city, the streets here never seem to rest. Home to millions of individuals, not to mention thousands of visiting tourists, Gralune is known for the various notable government buildings that exist there. In particular, IAF headquarters.

IAF:: The shortened version of the Interstellar Armed Forces, these soldiers act as law enforcement across the galaxy. Both the headquarters and training facility are located in the city of Ganulane, with various bases spread out across the neighboring planets and moons.

Glacerion:: A humanoid species originating on a planet located on the outskirts of the Milky-Way galaxy, these beings each possess astounding powers. They are one of the first and now main species to have human partners, resulting in a great deal of hybrid offspring.

Snaloo:: An old Glacerion legend, the Snaloo is thought to be a being with vast knowledge and powers. However, very few records exist of this elusive creature, resulting in a lack of intellect regarding the extent of its powers, whereabouts, or even looks.

Dion:: A shaggy, muscular beast originating from a desert planet, dions have since become domesticated and prized for their unwavering loyalty. While it takes a rather determined handler to train these creatures, once done they are loyal and intelligent companions.

Manx's Characters

Postby Manx » Fri Aug 15, 2014 12:48 am

      â–¹Character Name: Viera Valois
      â–¹Age: 19 years
      â–¹Gender: Female
▹Description: While clearly feminine in physique, when it comes to personality, there are few aspects about Viera that are effeminate. With a height of 5'10 she stands just above average, a fact she has come to appreciate while serving on a mainly male based force. As one of the few female officers working in her division of the IAF, every physical advantage she possesses over the more misogynistic of men is quite openly flaunted. Her lithe, graceful body is commonly underestimated in her workplace, her femininity often mistaken as weakness. However, any who have managed to invoke her wrath would surely say otherwise. Well-toned muscles lie beneath her fair skin, blemished only by the various scars she has acquired over the years. Her hair is cropped short in the form of a pixie cut which she rarely allows to grow past her earlobes, frequently becoming annoyed when it begins to obscure her vision. Naturally it is a light, coppery brown, although red dye typically highlights the tips of her hair. Viera's eyes are also light brown in colour and are speckled with splashes of gold.

Independent and strong-willed, Viera isn't exactly your typical soldier. Although possessing respect for her superior officers, Viera is also vocal in her opinions and expects them to be both heard and heeded. As stubborn as she is loyal, such traits have landed her into trouble on more than once occasion. Viera is not one to leave a man behind, no matter what the circumstances, and it is this willful tenacity that simultaneously make her one of the Intergalactic Armed Force's best and most troublesome officers. She is not beyond bending a few rules  if it means saving another's life, her career always taking second priority when it comes to her morals. A strong sense of right and wrong was instilled within her at a young age, and it is this trait that fuels her unwavering determination. Even as a child she was never one to back down from a challenge, strife always seeming to have the odd consequence of rousing her rather than shutting her down.

Having no interest in keeping up with the latest trends, Viera's wardrobe it quite limited. Composed mainly of her work uniforms, interspersed with a few exercise and caual outfits, she isn't one generally found having a night out on the town, so to speak. What little time she does have off from work is typically geared towards training, and perhaps a bit of reading. The fact that her division within the IAF consists mainly of male officers, some of whom are not remarkably pleased at the prospect of being bested by a woman, has meant Viera has had to work particularly hard in order to gain the same amount of respect. She has willingly taken up that challenge and as such has devoted herself to her career, allowing few distractions to divert her attention from that task. While this has resulted in relatively few friendships outside of the force, it is a consequence she has accepted without regret. Admittedly, it has helped that Viera is exceptionally skilled at the art of piloting. A natural and enthusiastic fly-boy, she has easily shattered numerous records set decades earlier; much to the annoyance of her commanding officers.

▹Power: The strongest ability Viera holds is that of healing. While many might argue that with this power she should have sought a career in medicine, that  particular field never held the least bit of appeal to Viera. As it is, her ability to quickly heal the shattered bones and split skin of both herself and others has proven to be quite useful. Massive healings have the tendency to sap her strength, leaving her weak and trembling, but have also worked effectively to preserve the lives of those on the brink of death. Additionally, Viera holds sway over light. In well-lit areas she can 'bend' beams around her, essentially rendering her invisible to the naked eye. While a mild heat haze tends to form around the spot she occupies, it is generally subtle enough to allow her to pass by unnoticed.

▹History: Born and raised as a single child, Viera's early childhood was relatively uneventful. Both her mother and father were born to the planet Oscelane, descended from both the Glacerion and human races for several generations previous. As fate would have it, however, it did not last. When Viera was merely six, her mother was diagnosed with terminal disease; one of the few left untreatable with the advanced medical technology and knowledge. She passed rapidly and with little warning, leaving her husband and only daughter alone. While shocked and heavy with grief for his late wife, Aaron doted and raised his daughter to the best of his abilities.

Aaron was a celebrity in his own sense, a well known major within the Intergalactic Armed Forces. His accomplishments in the field made his name renowned throughout the force, and it was with pride Viera wore her surname. While not particularly skilled with dealing with the more feminine side of his daughter, that was never much a concern for Viera; after all, she saw little appeal in make-up, dresses, and the like as it was. Rather, she became focused on her studies and various athletic activities. While her father was a talented and experienced soldier, even that was not enough to keep him safe forever, and when Viera was 17 her father, too, was taken from her. Her grief and anger, as well as pride for all that her father had done, drove her to follow in her parent's footsteps and thus, she too joined the IAF.

      â–¹Character Name: Ronan Kerr
      â–¹Age: 45 years
      ▹Gender: Male
▹Description: Even if he were not a commander in the Intergalactic Armed Forces, Ronan could easily be identified as a man few would be willing to trifle with. Standing at an intimidating 6"4, he typically towers over both citizens and soldiers alike. His massive stance is only accentuated by toned muscles, along with the various jagged scars that adorn his body. One such scar runs from his square jaw down across his neck, ending once touching his collar bone. Yet another is frequently visible through his closely cropped, grey streaked hair. While once a raven black, age and stress has come to lighten it significantly over the years. Such old wounds are not discussed openly, although it seems as though each of the officers under his command possess conflicting opinions on their origins. One sharp glare from Ronan's steely grey eyes, however, is often enough to prevent even the most curious of individuals from inquiring.

Although far older than most officers on the IAF, time has done little to diminish Ronan's vitality. While his brow may be touched by the wrinkles of age,  any who dared to challenge him would quickly find that his temper has not yet lost its fire, nor his body its edge. All the same, he has, for the most part, retired from field work. Rather, Ronan has turned his focus to keeping his officers in check and taking care to keep the IAF prim for the public eye. Despite this, no one can deny that he is a leader through and through. With a stoic and bold personality, Ronan is a strict and demanding superior, never stooping to sugar coat his words. What he says he means, and it is this blunt honesty that correlates so closely to his own powers. Ronan is a determined individual, and relentless, too, never hesitating when it comes down to chasing even the most notorious of criminals. It is this combination of traits that has made him the successful commander he is, as well as a prominent role model for many of the younger recruits.

Most commonly referred to simply as 'Commander Kerr', there are few who could claim to be close to this man. Unmarried, without children, and the final living member of his family, he truly is alone in many aspects. Despite keeping his officers at an arms length, a fact that many can attest to, they are, in all honesty, the closest thing to family he has left. For this reason, he cares for each of them greatly. While his gruff nature does little to reveal such depth of character, it does exist nonetheless. His affection is often shown in rather unconventional ways, such as by prompting specific officers to do their best; even if that means delivering a few harsh words or blunt truths in the process. It can also frequently be seen in his aggressive protectiveness, as once Ronan's trust has been gained, however daunting that task may be, he will fight fiercely to protect them.

▹Power: Ronan's powers are that of earth-shattering proportions; quite literally. Wielding power over the earth, he possesses the ability to shatter and manipulate the very ground. It is a formidable power, commanded in turn by a formidable man. While rarely used, at its peak his powers can tear deep fissues in the ground and cause small scale earth-quakes, though admittedly, it requires both great strength and concentration to do so. In addition to this, Ronan also has the odd ability of sensing the truth in another's words. Although his training accommodates this trait to a certain degree, even the most skilled of liars would be incapable of slipping a lie unnoticed. To evade this prying characteristic, many of his officers have learned to speak in deliberate half-truths in order to effectively dispel his suspicions.

▹History: While relatively little is known about his early life, Ronan has since become one of the most distinguished commanders in the history of the IAF.  His career

      â–¹Age: 20 years
      ▹Gender: Male
      ▹Description:

▹Power: As irksome as it tends to be for those around him, Tairad's power is that of the mind. Able to telepathically communicate with those around him, he can be quite useful on the field

My Characters

Postby 1.21 gigawatts » Mon Aug 18, 2014 3:00 pm

Name:
Anikalo (Kay) Ingrid Kelane
Age:
17
Gender:
Female

Description:
Standing at 5'5'', Anikalo isn't very tall compared to most people she's been around. Where she lacks in height, she makes up for in muscle. She is by no means bulky, one can almost describe her as frail looking, but she is definitely not one you would want to pick a fight with. Besides her long, bright orange hair (that almost looks like crayon orange) that goes down to the middle of her chest, Kay's most notable feature is her different coloured eyes. One eye is a vibrant green while the other is a deep purple.

Personality:
When you first meet Anikalo, you see a young girl who hates the world and never gives anyone a chance to introduce themselves. That isn't entirely false. She doesn't trust anyone in the world and doesn't take kindly to new people. You have to be able to handle her nature in order for her to even think of being nice to you. When you really get to know her and get on her good side, she is very protective, mainly over her younger brother, and sarcastic. She doesn't really take things lightly, often coming across as serious and not very loveable. She is very stoic but if anything would happen to her brother, you would have a lifelong enemy and she would do everything in her power to make sure she was the last face you saw. Kay has a thirst for knowledge that has increased her intelligence dramatically. Aralio claims she knows everything but she knows she doesn't. She also has a knack for fixing and inventing/creating things.

History:
When Anikalo was only 12 years of age, both her parents were murdered and her and Aralio were left to fend for themselves. They were always on the run from the police and child services, not trusting anyone to show them any sort of kindness. Half a year later, they met Demari, a young boy who's parents had also died, and they soon let him into their lives. There is a part of Annie's history that she has never shared with anyone. A part that could have changed her life for better or for worse.

Power:
Anikalo has the ability to control the element, earth. She is able to manipulate it and also become one with it. An example would be, if she touched the ground and concentrated, she could be absorbed into it and disappear. She can also absorb the earth into her, able to change her body into rocks. Another talent her power allows her is the ability to detect people within a 5km radius by sensing their presence within the earth. Her minor power is the ability to feel the emotions of others. She hasn't seemed to be able to control the power yet, as she feels others' emotions at random times. Some think this is the reason for her choice of solitude and anger.

NPC's

Name:
Aralio Manfred Kelane
Age:
14
Gender:
Male

Description:
Aralio is short, standing at only 5'2'' and is very scrawny. He doesn't have much muscle on him but can prove to be fairly strong. Not as strong as his sister but pretty strong for a 14 year old. He has shaggy, bright red hair and eyes that shine in a mixture of purple, orange, blue and green.

Personality:
In a few words, Aralio is a loveable, innocent little child. Even with all the hardships he has faced in his life, Aralio still lives life to the fullest and loves it. He can be quite humorous at times, which really annoys his sister. Although he seems like an outgoing kid, that is only to people he knows very well. If he doesn't know you, he tends to cower behind Anikalo and is very timid.

Power:
Aralio is able control fire. He is able to conjure it from his body and is immune to it. He can also engulf himself in flames and sometimes even fly. He hasn't quite figured out how to steady himself during flight and prefers not to crash into the ground or buildings every time. His major power is the ability to adapt to survive (Change what his body is made out of in order to survive in extreme conditions).

Name:
Demari Kelvin Hansbringer
Age:
18
Gender:
Male

Description:
Demari is a lot taller than the two he lives with, standing at exactly 6 feet. His body type is very broad, making him seem even larger. He's very skinny though but has lots of muscle. With his body, the muscle shows a lot more than it does on Anikalo. His dark purple hair is always spiky but isn't very surprising like his eyes. His eyes are an astonishing bright yellow colour that almost seem to blend in to the whites of his eyes. Demari is also a mute but Anikalo has learned to know what he's thinking without any conversation.

Personality:
Like Anikalo, Demari is a serious person, not taking things very lightly. Aralio also tends to make Demari mad at times when he goofs off. He is very protective to the others in his life and will risk his life for them. Adventure is on the top of his mind everywhere they travel and the homeless life almost suits him. There are no boundaries for him and he can do as he pleases. He is also a great leader, often taking charge if Anikalo allows him.

Power:
Demari has the ability to control darkness. He can create darkness in areas where light exists and see in darkness created by himself. He cannot see in natural darkness. He can also conjure up beings from the darkness to serve for him in battle. Demari's minor power is the ability to control poisons. He can sense any poison that he encounters and can even plant a duplicate of a poison he is around into another's body. He cannot create a poison himself, but must absorb the poison into himself to bend it to his will. It is very dangerous to himself and only uses it in times of extreme peril.

Anikalo also has a large female Dion called Rashcleigh, also known as Ash. Her mane, chin fur, and leg fur are all a muggy brown colour while the rest of her is a dusty grey colour. Her eyes glow bright green. She has a scar on her left eye and scratch scars on her left thigh and a bite of her left ear is missing. Her tail is also shorter from loosing it in a battle many years ago. They all have Spanish-like accents as well.

Re: 1.21 gigawatts & Manx

Postby 1.21 gigawatts » Tue Aug 19, 2014 12:16 am

Sunlight poured through the windows, brightening the kitchen and giving it a warm, welcoming feel. The sound of children laughing and playing echoed throughout the house. A small girl with bright orange hair and two different coloured eyes ran into the kitchen as a little boy with purple hair that covered his eyes chased her. The smiles on their faces were spread as wide as could be. Their trail led them to race around their parents as they worked in the kitchen. The smile on their faces were just as big as the kids'.

A giant bang covered the scene in red, causing Anikalo to wake with a start. Looking around, the room was dark with the odd flash of lightning giving the gloomy basement some light. Kay covered her face with her hands and put her elbows against her knees. 'It was just a dream. It was just a dream.' she tried to convince herself. The thing was, it wasn't entirely a dream. Flashbacks continuously raided the 17 year old girl's mind during sleep. Even images of what their lives could have been like if their parents had not been killed.

Looking over at her sleeping brother, Anikalo sighed. She wished she could give her brother more in life but knew it was far out of her reach when she could barely put food in front of him. She was thankful her power enabled her to produce plants to give them food when they couldn't find any, but it wasn't enough to live off of. Even then she had trouble producing healthy plants with the poor soil quality.

Sensing movement in the room, Kay stiffened and prepared herself for anything. Then she recognized the face she was looking at. The distinctive, glowing yellow eyes reassured Anikalo of Demari's presence. Her muscles relaxed for only a second. After another flash of lightning and a bang of thunder, a loud cry of a baby sounded above them. A light shone through the closed door of the basement that lead to the upper level.

With a look in Demari's direction, the boy nodded. They both knew it was best not to be in another person's house while they were awake. Anikalo crawled over to Aralio and gently shook his shoulder. "Aralio," she whispered. "It's time to go." Aralio grumbled before his eyes slowly pried open. With a quick stretch, Aralio pushed himself up and followed the duo to the window.

Anikalo crawled on top of a few boxes and pulled open the small window that enabled them their entrance. Kay urged the other two through the window, following them right after.

As they stepped into the rainy alleyway, Kay lead the group to an abandoned area where the road had cracked and where they could be left alone. Kay waved her hands and the road began to rumble beneath them. Within seconds, the ground sprouted in front of them, creating a small den that could easily accommodate the three of them and allow them space to sleep. The trio crawled inside the shelter and curled up to keep warm. In the center, Aralio created a fire to keep them warm.

Aralio curled up and was asleep within seconds while Demari leaned against the den's wall, trying to fall back to sleep. Anikalo on the other hand, couldn't imagine falling back to sleep after that nightmare. Instead, she just sat there, thinking. If she was really tired, sleep would pull her away, but if not, she would just keep watch for the night.

{With an incoherent, groggy moan, Viera tugged the heavy blankets over her head. Sunlight filtered in through her bedroom window and alongside her the wail of an alarm still cut through the early morning air. She had work today, that much she knew, but it did little to ignite her desire to leave her warm abode. Groping blindly at her bedside table, Viera was able to silence the infernal device after another few moments; only to curl deeper into the depths of her covers. It was in this position that she lay for several minutes, until a creak and gentle shudder atop the bed announced the arrival of someone -or something- beside her.

Viera suddenly felt hot breath on her neck and yelped as a cold nose shoved against her skin. Eyes shooting open to find the shaggy head of her Dion, Amos, staring down at her, golden eyes glittering in the morning light. "Alright, alright, I'm up," she groaned in annoyance, shoving the animal away as she sat up.

Dions were generally trained by the Intergalactic Armed Forces to aid in rooting out smugglers. Their sensitivity to scents made them ideal for the job, and once trained they were as loyal as any creature. Despite requiring early and thorough training, lest they become unmanageable, they had become increasingly popular across Oscelane for their faithfulness and noble stature. Although often assisting the IAF alongside Viera, Amos was far from one of the ordinary work force Dions; he had been a gift to her by her father, years ago. Viera smiled softly at the memory, twining her hand into Amos' thick, tan mane as he sprawled across her bed covers. Aaron had allowed his daughter to keep the pup, under the one condition that she took full responsibility for the creature; his training, up keep- everything. She had accepted the task enthusiastically, and despite the difficulty, she couldn't say she regretted a day of it.

With a glance at the clock, Viera hurriedly pushed herself off her bed. Quickly she got ready for the day, pausing only to grab a protein shake and wish Amos goodbye before whisking out the door. Striding purposefully through the city, Viera made sure to skirt City Hall. Despite it still being rather early, there was already a long line of civilians clustered outside of the doors, each demanding answers to the recent happenings. The flashing IAF insignia upon her breast drew enough attention as it was, and to stray too close to the building would only attract even more unwanted attention, each individual demanding answers she would be unable to provide.

Nearly jogging now as she neared the massive IAF building, gleaming as the sun touched its windows, Viera glanced down at her wrist watch. 7:28. She was going to make it in time, but just barely; Commander Kerr would certainly not approve. Slipping in through the glass doors, Viera beelined it towards her office on the third floor, purposefully avoiding the Commander's office. Her swift stride never broke as she continued down the hall, until, that is, a teasing voice rang out from the officer's lounge.

"Cutting it close, as usual, Valois?"

Flushing as she was caught in her dash to her office, Viera flashed a playful grin at the familiar officer to cover her embarrassment, pausing to lean against the door frame. "Ah, you know me; always up for a challenge, Demaio."

Tairad's brows raised as he regarded Viera, chuckling lightly, before replying sarcastically. "Oh yes, certainly pushing the limit on this one."

Viera opened her mouth to return her friend's banter, but was interrupted by an insistent beeping from her wrist communicator. Grimacing slightly as she moved to answer it, figuring it was Commander Kerr ready to take a piece out of her for her tardiness, and was pleasantly surprised to find it was merely Major Erez, the officer who often handled her assignments.

"Captain Valois?" came his gravelled voice, echoing through tiny device.

      "Yessir?"

"You've been assigned to a case down town. Just a minor disturbance, may not be anything of concern, but the city's been cracking down as of late, with the recent occurrences. I'll send the coordinates to your communicator in just a moment. Do a quick sweep, ask questions if you must, and stay out of trouble, alright?"

Viera nearly groaned as the major relayed her assignment. This was just as bad as traffic duty- which she'd been stuck on for far longer than she'd care to admit. These days, every unnatural sound in an alleyway or sketchy character wandering the streets managed to grab the public's attention, wasting hundreds of the IAF's hours. Often these disturbances were nothing of any significance, and were resolved without any police intervention. As one of the youngest captains on the force, such dull tasks were almost always assigned to her, along with the multitude of other new recruits. Her boredom was rapidly growing with each passing day, and it didn't help that across the room Tairad was smirking at her, all too aware of frustration of such tedious tasks.

"Yes, Major Erez. Of course," Viera replied, keeping the annoyance from her voice.

      "Oh, and Captain Valois?"

      "Yessir?"

"Would you inform Captain Demaio that he will be accompanying you?"

Viera watched in amusement as the smirk faded from Tairad's lips, replaced with an unimpressed scowl. Struggling to keep the laughter from her voice, she glanced back to the communicator.

"I'll do that, thank you major."

The communicator went black as Erez terminated the link, and looking up she flashed a wicked grin at Tairad. "I suppose we should get on our way. Shall we?"

Feeling a light nudge on her shoulder, Anikalo slowly began to see light creep through the thin film of her eyelids. That was when she realized she had fallen asleep. Waking with a start, Kay shot up, heart pounding. She looked around and noticed it was only Demari who had touched her.

Feeling something different about her hands, Kay looked down at the ground and noticed her hands had attached and blended to the earth in a cluster of rocks and dirt. It was a natural defence for her when she was startled. Finally able to relax, Anikalo released her grip to the earth and her hands returned to normal.

"I think you should stop getting scared Kay," Aralio spoke up and Kay looked at him with confused eyes. "You seem to grow facial hair when that happens." She could tell her younger brother was suppressing a laugh and she looked over at Demari for clarification. The boy bit his bottom lip and pointed to his top lip. Kay quickly felt her top lip but felt nothing. Grabbing a broken piece of glass from the ground, Anikalo peered into the reflective surface and noticed a pen drawing of a moustache plastered on her top lip.

If looks could kill, Aralio would have been long gone with what he received from Anikalo. She rubbed vigorously at the drawing with a damp finger, hoping to get it off. The mirror reflection smashed her hopes as it revealed no process in the removal of the moustache.

"I'm hungry," Aralio stated as if nothing had happened.

"Go find your own food," Kay replied, annoyance clear in her voice. She crawled out of the makeshift home she had created the night before and Demari followed right behind. Kay dusted off her ratty blue jeans and pulled her black hoodie hood over her head. Her bright orange hair still fell out the front, cascading over her shoulder and down her chest on one side. Shoving her hands in her pockets, Kay moved forward as the small cave she created collapsed behind her after Aralio had left it. They walked into the busy morning streets and weaved their way through the crowd.

After a while of walking, Anikalo became tired of the constant flood of pedestrians and pulled the two boys into an alleyway. As soon as they left the hustle of the working civilians, Demari began sniffing the air. That was when Kay smelled the delicious scent of fresh baked bread. Demari pointed towards a building with a back door and window, presumably where the scent was coming from.

Kay nodded to Demari and the two boys headed off towards it. She held back for a moment, bringing out a pen she had found a few days back. When she uncapped it,twenty four tally marks appeared on her left forearm. Three were already cut in half with another tally mark and Kay slashed another one off with the pen. When she placed the cap back on the pen, the marks disappeared once again, leaving her arm as it was before.

Kay caught up with the boys at the back of the bakery and they peered inside the building through the window. All the bakers were busy creating masterpieces of delicious bread to sell to hungry customers, never leaving the kitchen for a split second.

With a quick look at Demari, the boy nodded and place his hands on the window sill. He closed his eyes, concentrating on the power within him. Shadows began crawling from his fingers, creeping their way into the kitchen and down the wall. Once they hit the floor, the shadows burst into the building, engulfing the entire room in darkness. That instant, Demari sprang up and raced into the building. He was quickly swallowed by the darkness as well but could easily manoeuvre through everything.

Within minutes, Demari returned with a loaf of bread and three croissants in his hands. Kay and Aralio quickly followed him as they raced down the alley. The bakery returned to its natural light, leaving the bakers baffled by the recent event.

Once they were a safe distance away from the bakery, the trio slowed to a stop in another alley. They sat down beside a dumpster and began to enjoy their fresh breakfast.

{"I swear, officer, those shadows... They simply crept out across the floor, and the next think I knew we were in complete darkness!"

      "Unlike anything I've ever seen!"

"It was unnatural, I'll tell ya."

Viera feigned interest in the bakery's various open counters as Tairad hung back, addressing the concerns of the disconcerted civilians. As usual, a small occurrence had been blown completely out of proportion, resulting in anxiety and panic flowing through the baffled bakers and a newly formed congregation of nervous citizens. A phenomenon that was occurring more and more frequently, come to think of it. In any case, while the crime rate within the city had fallen dramatically over the years, it was still far from perfect. Petty theft was still all too common, and that was precisely what Viera suspected this latest incident was.

From the corner of her eye, she watched as Tairad finished reassuring the crowd and managed to wrench himself away before anymore questions were asked. Striding to her side, they took advantage of the momentary lull in inquiries to slip away from the store, promising to contact the owner immediately should anymore evidence present itself. Finished typing out the short report on his wrist communicator, Tairad shut off the device and glanced at his partner from the corner of his eye. "So, what would you say that was all about?"

Viera merely shrugged her shoulders at the question, scanning the city around her. She understood he asked more out of courtesy than anything else, seeing as with his powers he would be able to glean the information from her mind with ease, but suspected he had already come to the same conclusion. "Didn't seem all that unusual to me. I'd say it was nothing more than a theft, plain and simple. Probably an individual with some sort of power over darkness, created a distraction, and swiped a bit of bread- all the while giving those bakers a right fright, of course. Aside from a missing loaf or two, no real harm done."

"So it would seem," Tairad replied, nodding once in agreement. A momentary pause was accompanied by an irritated sigh, and he muttered darkly under his breath, "Spending a day tracking down a bread thief. Fantastic."

"Cheer up, Demaio," Viera quipped with faux cheeriness, nudging an elbow into his side. "At least it's another day of avoiding paperwork."

Tairad grimaced in agreement as they strode down the city street. With an increase as of late in so called 'disturbances', all of the IAF's officers had become ladened with piles of paperwork. A good deal of their comrades had become walled within their offices simply trying to keep up with the surplus. While looking into petty city crimes was hardly an exhilarating task, it still beat the alternative.

It was only when Veira reached their vehicle, a modified IAF shuttle, that she stiffened. At the edge of her vision a figure flickered, and she turned to catch the fleeting image of a large, shaggy creature- a Dion. Glancing over at Tairad, she knew immediately from the sharp edge in his swirling blue-grey eyes that he too had spotted the beast. Left untrained and unattended, Dions could pose a true threat to the public, and their presence could lead to far more than severe consequences than a simple nuisance.

"I suppose our bread thief will have to wait," Viera said wryly, placing a wary hand on her energy gun before turning to follow the creature.

As they nibbled on the fresh bread, Aralio piped up once more.

"I want berries." He said through a mouthful of cheese croissant. With a sigh, Anikalo waved her hand above the ground as a small plant slowly sprouted from a crack in the concrete. The plant was very weak and it was painful for Kay to watch it struggle upwards. It finally sprouted some berries but they quickly wilted. Only three healthy ones were left and she immediately picked them before they too died.

"That's all I can do," she sighed as she handed a berry to each of the boys. "The soil quality is too poor for me to create anything anymore. Now eat up. We must keep moving."

As they finished their breakfast, Kay heard the padding of large paws coming down the alley. Her Dion, Rashcleigh, darted past the trio. Kay noticed the Dion's eyes flinch in their direction but they were quickly averted away.

"Ash!" Aralio called out but was cut off with Anikalo's hand over his mouth. Ash was trained so well that she could find the group wherever they were. She wouldn't run past them unless there was something wrong.

Sure enough, two people ran past them, chasing after the Dion. Kay immediately noticed the outfits the two wore. They were workers for the IAF. People they have been running from for so long.

Once they passed, the trio jumped up from their spot behind the dumpster and sprinted away from the newcomers. Kay knew Ash could handle herself against the duo, but apparently Aralio didn't think so. Without her even noticing, Kay's little brother stopped as her and Demari kept going. He turned around and yelled at the top of his lungs as his hands burst into flames.

"Hey! Leave her alone!"

Anikalo and Demari skidded to a stop and twirled around. "Aralio! Run!" He didn't listen. He was determined to save their Dion, no matter what the cost. "Idiot!" Kay mumbled under her breath.

{With Tairad keeping pace closely behind her, Viera led the way as they trailed the Dion. Hands warily fingered their energy guns as they ran, ready to draw in a moment, if needed. They were standard IAF issue and although effective at incapacitating close range threats, truly served little other purpose; the rigid exterior truly was the deadliest part of the guns. These particular weapons were not meant to be damaging, but rather simply knocked out individuals for a short amount of time. Ideal for severe riot controls and subduing rowdy criminals, but not so much in an actual fight. However, a standard alley sweep had hardly qualified for signing out any weapon of greater power, and thus, they were stuck with what they had.

In any case, Viera hoped not even the energy gun would be needed in this situation. This particular Dion certainly seemed to have its mind set on something, weaving through the alleys and various debris with practiced grace. Obviously, it had a destination in mind, and so far had failed to show any aggressive behaviour toward the pair. If she was being perfectly honest, Viera would have described the animal's behaviour as rather peculiar. While Dions were intelligent creatures, it was generally only domesticated ones that portrayed this type of apparent devotion and attachment to specific areas. However, they were also highly coveted creatures, generally possessing noble blood lines and a hefty price to boot. What would one be doing out on the streets?

This inquiry was answered, however, as a sharp voice echoed through the alley. Viera reacted immediately, skidding to a halt and turning on her heel to glance at the new individual. Her hand had tightened to clutch the weapon at her hip before she had fully assessed the situation, but slackened slightly when she caught sight of the offender. Despite the fire flaring at his hands and the angry edge in his voice, he was simply a boy; little more than a child. Rotating to keep a careful eye on both the Dion and the boy, she focused her attention to Tairad.

'Calm him down,' Viera's urgent thoughts reached out to his, eyes falling on the Dion beyond them as she kept a firm grasp on her energy gun. 'I have you covered.'

Tairad accepted this without a word, voiced or otherwise, and turned his attention towards the boy. Flicking the visor of his IAF helmet up, he held his empty palms up to the kid. "Hey, it's alright. We're not here to hurt anyone," Tairad began soothingly, layering his voice persuasively with trickle of his own power.

Gently, he extended his own, steadying thoughts towards the distraught boy in an attempt to pacify him. As the additional voices rung through the alleyway, Tairad's eyes flickered to assess each individual, but he maintained his position.
