“The council was out on recess discussing what course should be taken with Arash when I was called in. I remember clearly a mark on the side of his face given by my counterpart Ramrio, a water elemental who is far better suited for working with captives that need to be kept alive. He gave his name willingly to me to which I flashed a surprised glance at were Kern. After all the course to be taken with the man was highly contested, and my work tended to have one end.”

“Turns out your man had some dirt on Kern, who needed the job finished without mention of his little secrets. After some negotiations we staged torture and an attack in which the man had escaped and pulled a knife on Kern, thus forcing me to act. It cost Faypine another Serpent spy who could have leaked vital information, much to my pleasure.” He took another drink. “Falcons want gruesome. I assure you your senior was gone long before flames touched his skin.”

Standing Luke makes his way around the bed before sprawling in it. “You said you wanted to provide contact between Alec, myself and Esterbrush. What possible interest would I have in Esterbrush besides access to venom? Which I will add would be nonnegotiable if only for fear of both my life and the serpent healer.”

Luke’s eyes feel on Idris, curiosity burning. “You know Idris, for whatever reason you sought me out to begin with, I understand your motives to have changed. You having treated me, an action that will repair a weapon for every Nation but yours, and in a way that is.. How did you put it? Recklessly romantic?"

A soft smile pushed at his eyes. "These days I am slow to trust people, and find fear in strange things. If your willing to put up with it, I am willing to help you gather any scarp of information wanted or needed bout this reached nation. You can play off my loyalties as payment and I get to aid your nation in playing mind games with the falcons."

Leaning a little into Idris he took in small details such as the way the man rested his hand besides him. "If your indeed planning to court me, its going to be a long road." Gingerly, as to mind the injury, he placed his hand over Idris's.

"Don't let me discourage you." Said softly as he relaxed allowing the drink calm his nerves.

"I didn't know Arash well, but his death was a blow to the vipers and to Intelligence overall. He was a bit of a department legend since so few operatives make it to his age. I spent a month just scrambling to read his dispatches in Esterbrush before I felt like trying to shoulder the field responsibilities."

"After they saw the burns, most of the home office was convinced you'd finally cracked," Idris added. "I believed otherwise, so I volunteered for the post. Asking Lydia to accompany me here was the first step. We both had to trust that her Greenheart heritage would be enough of a lure to the falcons that it would also conceal my arrival. Marry has reason to keep my presence a secret as long as I'm either staying in her house or treating your wounds."

He made space for Luke with little thought to his shoulder. At first the twinges were bearable, but at last he was forced to lie on his stomach and crane his neck to keep eye contact.

"A deal with Esterbrush gets Alec information, money, supplies, and the full support of my section," Idris offered. "Although you might have been able to make a deal for cobra venom, it's rare to see a full physician travel abroad except in the worst and most diplomatically sensitive circumstances. Drain is not an illness with an existing cure and injuries like yours need to be treated in person. It's not something our leaders could have sent to you without offering the attendance of a healer as well."

He examined Luke's wrist as he spoke. A reassuring lack of swelling met his first cursory glance. If the flesh continued to mend without incident in the next few hours, he could be confident that there had been no further injury. The smile that met his eyes when he next looked up stifled his too-glib response. Here was both the closeness he'd wanted and the impossible warmth that belonged to Luke, alone.

"If I'm planning to court you, I won't be thinking about your other loyalties," Idris answered. "I traveled a long road to get here. What's another journey?"

His thoughts had been drifting before the first touch and, though he fought the pull of sleep, he would not soon be able to resist the combined effects of exhaustion and comfort. He dozed at Luke's side while gathering the rest of his words.

Luke chose to remain silent on the matter of whether or not he had indeed cracked. After the incidents of last night, who could rightfully say he hadn't?

Rest came easily with pain no longer demanding energy and attention.

He wasn't sure what had woken him, but he found himself laying in a pitch black room. Night had fallen, and though he wasn’t sure how long he had been asleep his body suggested it to have been long enough to feel well rested. The breath of someone near almost drove him into the wall before remembering who it belonged to. The jarring movement of his initial reaction was sure to have woken his guest. Softly he spoke in the direction of the warmth that embraced him.

“Idris, I need to attend to some business. I should only be gone a few hours, your welcome to stay here while I am away.”

Idris awoke to motion in the darkness. No one but Luke was in the room, so he managed not to fumble for his absent knives or even to regret the lack of his belt.

"Don't get into any fights," he answered, his words rounded and slurred with sleep. "Undo all the work on your wrist."

"Lot of work," he repeated into a pillow. "Warn me it's you when you're back." Thus satisfied that he'd made his opinion clear, he subsided again into a dreamless rest.

Luke made good on his promise to Idris, returning only three hours later.

This time he was sure to knock on the door before entering, giving warning of his arrival. With sunrise still hours away Luke let a small flame illuminate him as he entered, relocking the door as it slide shut once more.

He had met with a group of elementals who aided his plans, but had been stopped by a group of corvids, prolonging his trip an extra hour. Making his way back to the bed he became increasingly aware of their capture of not just his time, a small slit along the inside of his palm remained from their encounter.

“Hope I wasn’t gone too long.”

Idris woke to the rapping on the door, peered out from beneath his nest of bedclothes, and then relaxed at the sight of a lone flame held in Luke's hand. No stranger could counterfeit such an effect. Shadows bounced crazily between his fingers and wrapped the edges of the bed in a sea of black that his shape waded through as he crossed the room.

In truth Idris did not know how long Luke had been absent. One moment he'd closed his eyes to an empty bed and the next he'd opened them to the man's approach.

"You're back," he murmured. "That's enough."

Luke relaxed into the embrace of his bed, curling up with the pocket of warmth preserved by Idris. He cradled his hand carefully as to keep the still weeping palm from bleeding through the wrapping.

Idris was sure to notice his new injury, but Luke didn't have the heart to wake him for it. If the man woke enough to talk or notice it himself Luke would ask for aid, until then he felt he owed him rest.

"If only everyone were as easily pleased."

Blood scent followed Luke's arrival and banished his easy thoughts of sleep. "Let me see," he said, cognizant of the temporary bindings that could be done while one-handed.

Idris fumbled, muttered, and finally reached the leftover kit that had been discarded beneath the bed.

"Fighting's bad for your wrist," he reminded Luke. "All the venom in the world won't be able to repair the damage if you refuse to rest. Now give me a light."

His vision was still spotted where the brighter part of the first small flame had dazzled him. Though he could and often did work in the dark, it would be another quarter-mark before he regained the definition that brief candle had taken. He reached for Luke's forearm and probed for the bandage with the tips of his fingers.

Cloth still wrapped the wrist he'd treated, but beneath that was a new and rougher bandage wound over the palm. This he undid with sure, quick movements.

Offering a light when prompted.

“What kind of fight leaves a gash in your palm?” Taking slight offense to Idris’s reminder of rest. “I, despite your belief of me, am taking your advice seriously… This was just a minor setback.” Luke eyed the snake. “Non-fight related I assure you.”

Idris’s touch was sure and predictable, remaining kind when handling even a frustrating wound such as this.

The fire hovered near Idris, making his skin glow as if it instead were the source. Flames caught the lighter parts of those brown eyes, which flicker with the small pulse of heat he kept alive to light them.

Luke though nothing of the pain, but instead of the previous night’s kiss. Or of the times long ago in Esterbrush. He could still feel the weight of the then young serpent press against him in a once lonely cot. The way the sunlight had flickered down on them the following morning.

Luke had been so ashamed of the attention, to find himself wishing to illicit it now…His peering gaze at Idris only broken by his own fear to continue.

He dabbed at the wound with treated gauze and then pressed his palm to Luke's while he tied the dressing in place. Absent were the scratches or shredding to be expected with a struggle. The edges of the wound were surprisingly neat. If pulled apart, they would have closed again in bloody symmetry.

"No," he admitted. "This is not the sort of wound you get from fighting."

The cut reminded him of the straight lines some shifter tribes practiced in rites of ritual scarification. Intentional, burdened with purpose, but for a reason he struggled to imagine. In this case the injury was not deep enough to scar. What, then, had been the aim?

Placement and circumstance knit together in his mind all at once.

Blood. The only reason to break the skin with such care, to lay open the palm without either maiming or killing its owner.

Idris was at the point of asking about what blood oaths existed in Faypine when he chanced to look up and read Luke's expression in the dim. He was familiar with that focused attention, but had not faced its mute possibilities since he'd been a junior officer escorting the elemental when he last visited Esterbrush. The celebration of the winter festival had lead his charge into excesses of drink best left forgotten.

Only the intervention of a ship captain had kept him from making good on Luke's advances even then.

He'd been sure that his own imagination had been playing tricks until the clear light of day and the racing tide interrupted their stealing kisses together in a garden alcove. That brief afternoon had haunted him all the way to his assignment in Belden, where it refused to be forgotten over his next year's training. Then again in Snowden while he read dispatches and slaved over antidotes through the early spring and on into late fall. His trips between Belden, Snowden, and Esterbrush blurred into one long journey.

Until Jossan Keystone defeated Alec in the Arena. And then there had been no time for thoughts which did not concern healing his brother.

Idris drew Luke toward himself with a motion both inevitable and remembered. An invitation which echoed and erased the old.
