Essix
Essix's heart leaped up into his throat when he heard a dreadful snapping sound, and felt the branch start to fall. The bear roared with satisfaction and opened its jaws to end the griffin's life. Essix yelped and leaped from the branch and dug his talons into the tree trunk, hanging on for dear life. He suddenly saw a flash of black feathers and heard a screech; not his, but another griffin's. Essix suddenly filled with hope; the grizzly wouldn't be able to take on two griffins in battle, especially not a starving one.
Well, Essix thought, his talons leaving claw marks on the tree trunk, it's about time I did something.
The bear seemed to be distracted by the other griffin's cry, because it seemed to be looking in another direction. This was the only chance Essix could get to fight back.
With a loud screech, not of fear, but of rage, he leaped from the tree trunk and twisted in the air, making him land straight on the grizzly's broad back. The bear was shocked for a few heartbeats, then started shaking its pelt and rearing up, trying to get griffin off its back. Essix dug his talons into the bear's shoulder blades and narrowed his eyes; he was not giving up without a little bear blood on his talons.
Wherever you are, he thought, thinking of the other griffin, I could sure use some help!
