"A rather peaceful morning, don't you think?" a voice abruptly broke the silence the dawn brought. A hefty frame colored in thick flannel of a bleeding plaid color approached with a confident step, leaves and twigs crunching underneath his boots. Dark hair loosely dressed into a braid and laid undisturbed over his shoulder and over his chest. Occupying the space a couple feet from the Alpha, Dimitri sat cross-legged and looked to the other in clear-minded awareness. The morning chill did little effect to his weathered skin, unfazed by it as he began cutting a vibrant red apple in halves, one of the few he had left in his own personal stash.
"Hmm, yes, there's something riveting about the air here." he hummed deeply, pausing only to look around. His keen eyes thoroughly scanning their surroundings, an exciting chill crept up his spine as there was just something mysterious and spiritual about the forest.

Eyes returning to Brooke, he was quiet for a few moments before giving a soft huff and a crooked smirk, outstretching his hand to offer a slice to her. "Here. You look like you need it; you'd be surprised how such a small thing can give you so much strength." Dimitri gave a petty smile then glanced away, he looked and acted well-rested and ready to take on everything that the day threw at him, and while that was indeed true, weariness was slowly beginning to take him too. His bones and joints where gradually grow stiff and sore from the constant traveling and exposure to the cold. But never would it exhaust his acts of selflessness and sharing, which weren't unheard of but they weren't necessarily common either.

Such tranquility and ease did the call of a new dawn bring, as well as bringing with it the many songs of birds and the stirring of other wildlife. Fresh and crisp was the morning air, vaguely hinted with the clean scent of pine as a light, cool breeze still clung and rippled by. Teasing the trees and foliage, a drizzle of dew coated the earth with sparkling brilliance, displaying a cascade of colors when the sun's scattered rays hit them just right.
Such a morning was one that this petite healer took the time to savor, pausing momentarily in her own duties of tending to her herbs and plants. With a distant longing in her eyes, she stared off into the forest at nothing in particular but merely to take pleasure in the silence of the moment. Few and far between were these near surreal occurrences, one of the few times everything seemed to be at peace. If not just for a short time.
"Hmm, after I finish with these I need to head upstairs to tend with the others..." Aria muttered thoughtfully to herself, carefully working out her schedule for that day. The ones she kept upstairs in the small greenhouse she had specifically built for her medical uses weren't particularly from around these parts, and as a result called for very special treatments. The ones she worked on now could be found within the very forest that surrounded their home and were accustom to the climate and nature, unlike the ones she kept separated in the greenhouse.
Setting aside a small watering can, Aria subconsciously dusted off the her hands and clothes, deciding for that day to wear some simple jeans and a worn, oversized shirt good for when she was gardening. Carefully pushing her hair out of her face with the back of her hand, still being mildly caked with dried dirt and fertilizer, Aria gave an exasperated sigh and heading inside to properly wash her hands. It was still fairly earlier, perhaps too early for some, but she was an early bird and still had lots to get done. "I should periodically rotate the plants so they get enough sunlight, not to mention need to do some pot transferring and then the normal routine of feed, watering, preening and check of unwanted insects--" she rambled off to herself for a good fifteen minutes. Deciding she'd do that in an hour or so, Aria proceeded to cleaning her hands and drying them before heading off to the kitchen.

She was honestly not one to eat a lot, sometimes not eating enough or not at all, and that morning was no different. Resorting to just getting a glass of water and leaning back against the counter, sipping gingerly and taking in the stillness of nobody else being around. However, with the aid of her keen senses of her canine side, she was able to tell right away that she hadn't been the only one awake. It was fading though, the scent wasn't as potent as it was normally. 'Hmmm, he must be out...' she thought, staring down at her faint reflection in the water, a spark of something entered her eyes before disappearing as soon as it came. Clearing her throat, Aria shrugged her shoulders as if that fleeting, uncertain moment was nothing important and carefully held her glass to her lips with both hands.
Finishing it up, she set the cup in the sink and stood there motionless for a time, staring off aimlessly as her mind buzzed with much activity.

Drifting between the borders of his subconscious and reality, Shay grew more and more bitter. Exhausted he was from his lack of proper sleep, or more so from the trouble of falling asleep, as he laid there curled up in his wolf form. Body quivering from the cold, something he was never use to nor did he particular like, it was the main culprit to his problems. Lazily opening one eye, grumbling and growling under his breath in distaste for the coming of morning. Every little sound he could hear, no matter how hard he flattened his ears back against his furry, black skull, he could still hear and it didn't at all help him in his growing foul mood.

Exhaling heavily, lifting his head up simply to give a big, toothy yawn and then lay it back down. Disinterested in the conversations and growing signs of life within the camp, he wanted nothing to do with it. All he wanted was some well deserved sleep. Opening his eyes halfway again at the sound of rustling leaves nearby, spying a brief glimpse of grey and silver fur as one of the other pack members moseyed about the grounds in their wolf form. Shay huffed before tucking his head closer to his body, black fur rippling from time to time either by the wind or by response to some itch he didn't want to bother with.
'This is stupid... hiding and staking out in the cold like we're some criminals on the run, just stupid...' he thought in annoyance, muzzle twitching and threatening to pull up to reveal fangs that have seen their fair share of bloodshed and flesh. All of this angered him and the more he held it in, the worse it got.

Despite the early hour- or perhaps because of it- there were a number of things going on all at once that ought to have been appreciated. There were delicate songbirds calling to their friends and loved ones in the trees, the air was neither too chill nor to stifled, and a permeating greenness was present as if to pretend that there was no problem by covering it all in the finest shades of natural pigment. What a laugh it was- the forest itself seemed to be saying, "There's nothing going on at all", and yet if one listened carefully, the sounds of humanity echoed from beyond- lumberjacks having their morning coffee, hunters cleaning their guns and feeding their hounds scraps of breakfast. And this place- these kinsmen of his- liked to pretend that the humans weren't really all that big a threat. But the Whitestars were? The universe jests, surely.

Angus had no appreciation for these things- oh, he saw the irony, the cover-ups, participated in the pointless banter and brutality like anyone else. But it was all....empty. Nothing about any of it really made any sense except for one thing- humans were killing them, chasing them down like common animals. Now that- that was the real problem. But whatever, try changing an entire valley's mind. Conflict, ho; reason, bah! Entertaining himself with his own inner monologue, the scraggly young man stroked his stubbly excuse for a beard staring off into nothing at all. He had been restless in sleep, tortured by dreams of death, and yet here he was, leaning casually against a stunted pine, gazing into the woods where the refugees of Whitestar hid themselves away.

The morning routine, a ballet performance featuring caffeine and sugar in a duet, a stunning solo performance by some strips of ham, a grand song and dance number by two eggs and some hashed potatoes, and finally a riveting encore from the clatter of neglected spoons and forks and plates all crammed into a single sink. Her meticulous adherence to a plan ended here- now it was just another day of being a lost little lamb among countless other stray sheep. "Too much poetry again," the dark-haired girl growled to herself as she pulled on something a little more appropriate to the weather- strays or not, she refused to go outside in boxers and a tank top, instead replacing them with a polite blouse, a pair of olive-green pants, and a beat up set of boots that must have seen many months of travel. A thermos of coffee in hand, she decided to check up on the night watch crew; nobody liked night watch, at least nobody normal.

Coming upon the stale scent of a packmate, she followed its trail, getting slightly fresher as she approached the source. Rounding a thick oak, her eyes quickly caught sight of the pale wolf who, despite what were probably her best efforts, looked incredibly tired. "Hey," Virva bobbed her head up as a greeting, sitting down near the fighter. "Coffee's up," she added, twisting the lid off of the large silver thermos and offering the deep black-brown liquid.

"Thank you." Brooke accepted the offered slice of apple, the movement the first she'd made since Dimitri had arrived. She bit into it, relishing the crisp crunch. Her blanket had fallen from her shoulders when she reached to take the apple, but she made no move to retrieve it, despite the early-morning chill. She looked thoughtful, half-lidded eyes still fixed on the coals and a small frown on her face.

When she'd finished the apple, Brooke turned around, shifting into a kneeling position. She began to neatly roll up her blanket, brushing away the scraps of leaf litter that clung to its surface. She'd slept fully-clothed, and wore jeans and a plain shirt, under her typical bomber jacket. As usual, she had on tough, practical boots. All clothes she could move well in, and dull colors that wouldn't stand out too much among the trees. It wasn't camouflage- she wasn't trying to hide- but trying to be seen was never a good idea, and the army-green jacket was a good compromise. Placing a knee on her blanket to keep it in a tight roll, Brooke leaned over to snag a strap of her rucksack and drag it closer. Everything she owned now could fit in there. Even though they weren't traveling today, she liked to have all her possessions ready to go. Just in case. Two straps on top could buckle the blanket in place and save space inside, and she set to buckling them now, easier said than done with fingers numb from cold. As she worked, she spoke.

"I've been thinking,"She began,"About what we're going to do. Where we're going to go." Privately, she was glad Dimitri had come to talk to her. She needed a second opinion, and who better to ask than the pack's Beta? "We can't just sit here and wait. Today, I'm going to lead a group into Stormrunner territory."She took a breath, as if to steady herself. The last buckle of her rucksack snapped into place, and she rose smoothly to her feet, brushing dirt off of her knees. Two long strides carried her over to the nearest tree. A long branch lay at its base, and she knelt to pick it up. Brooke returned to the campfire, poking at the coals with the stick- cautiously, of course. It was a moment before she spoke again.

"I want to meet their Alpha. This place is perfect for us, and we have nowhere else to go. Maybe they'll change their minds. But if they don't..." She trailed off, leaving the words unspoken, trusting him to know what she meant. And, really, what else could she be speaking of? It wasn't like they had many choices. Fight, run, or die. They had nowhere to run. Dying wasn't an option, not really. But maybe, just maybe, they could compromise. Just this once.

But really, if she were to be honest with him- and honest with herself- Brooke knew there was little hope for a peaceful solution. They still had to try, though, even if it really was just going through the motions. Sparks spat into the air as the stick broke a piece of charred wood in half, revealing its brightly-glowing center, and a wave of heat washed over the two. Flame reached up and lit the bark of the stick, which Brooke was quick to let the fire take, dropping it instantly. It landed with a shower of sparks and the fire, nearly dead only moments ago, rose up again to lick at the wood and reach hungrily up for more. Brooke watched it silently for a moment, arms crossed across her front, hands tucked in under her arms to keep them warm. She stood tall, back straight, despite the weariness trying to drag her down. She turned to Dimitri momentarily, prompting him for his opinion with only one word:
"Thoughts?"

His eyes may have been focused intently on the apple he cut his pocket knife into, but ever so carefully he hinged on her words. Pondering them and observing them from different angles, but no matter how he looked at it, there was very few routes of action they could take. This subtly upset him, that they'd be forced to react in such primal ways when all they wanted was some reassurance that what little of their pack survived would be safe.
With the humans at their tail and a pack reluctant to help in their time of need at they head, their was little room for detours. Such a sad, cruel world it has turned into, that not even fellow kin would help them in their hour of need.

Humming uncertainly as he contemplated, Dimitri really didn't want to risk losing more members to a brother pack but neither did he think they'd be able to survive and fight against the humans. Exhaling heavily, stopping altogether in his work on the apple, lifting his gaze up to the Alpha as he said firmly,"Impolite and disrespectful it may be to encroach on another's territory, but in these circumstances, I agree."

"I've had enough death and fear plaguing my dreams these past score of days, I don't want to see anymore hurt." he glanced away and about the camp before settling his gaze on the fire. "However, I don't condone such neglectful behavior in a time of need, if it had been the other way around we would have accepted them, if not under few set stipulations." No matter how he looked at it, he believed at one time or another, if they wished to survive against the humans then they'd have to band together. Survival by numbers will be their saving grace.
"But yes, I agree with your plans," giving a deep nod of his head in acceptance to this, only after then did he focus his line of sight on Brooke,"for good measure, however, I feel we should try to be a bit respectful and civil, as to prove that we're no young pack of insolent pups, but if then it doesn't work... well..."

"Desperate times call for desperate measures." there was a spark of devious intentions in his eyes. Thoughtful and considerate he may have been from the outside and no doubt he was, but he still was conniving and twisted at heart. Shifting in place, he slowly stood back up to his full height, quietly savoring the warmth that radiated from the fire. Thinking more on the topic at hand, wondering if they was anything that could foolproof their chances of safety, but alas, he couldn't think of any.

A butterfly fluttered across the open field Chase was standing at the edge of, still in his strong wolf form. The Stormrunner alpha stood quietly and watched as it went across the field, hopping from flower to flower, sometimes pausing a little longer at some than others. It brought his thoughts to rest on the matter of the pack sitting just outside their eastern borders. Yes, he was well aware they were there, and he was well aware of their situation. In ways, the butterfly made him think of that other pack, specifically of how they had been uprooted from their home. He suspected they were a lot like the Stormrunners in many ways, like in their pride. What does it feel like to be a prideful pack like them and be uprooted from their ancient land?

He didn't want to know what that felt like, and he could only imagine it. He suspected that this pack was like the butterfly, traveling from place to place, looking for somewhere to lay low until they could return home. It was sad now that Chase thought of it, and it certainly brought forth sympathetic emotions toward the other pack. Yet, deep inside him, there was something else. If this pack was as much like his own as he suspected, then surely they'd understand his reasons for hesitating? For humans, sharing property might be just a simple exchange of favors; however, for wolves like them, it's much more than that.

To their kind, land is a sacred thing, passed down from one generation to the next. It is gained or lost in honorable actions and events. Long ago, it was believed that the ancient goddess Lupa gifted each of her favored children, the alphas of the 12 divine packs, a piece of her blessed land to guard and protect with their souls. To give up or even let any others have the chance to control a bit of it was considered highly dishonorable, even shameful. Long story short, ancient wolf customs are still valued today, and the Stormrunner pack was one that had been raised to still respect them greatly.

Chase sighed quietly, these thoughts continuing to run through his head. Despite that, he would still like to see if they could work something out and avoid any more bloodshed than they already had, maybe even join forces and fight off the humans together. Now that's just daydreaming, he told himself with a sigh. Maybe. Under other circumstances, that would definitely be a dream, though it has happened in the past, packs forming an alliance and working together for a greater good. At this point though, it could be a reality, if he maneuvered things just the right way.

A breeze blew toward him, and he lifted his nose into the air to smell the scents that came with it. There were the usual scents of deer, trees, and birds, and mixed in with that were scents from the other pack. The wind came from the east, which was how he could tell they were at the eastern border still. That's the top of my to-do list today, he thought to himself as he turned around and headed back toward the house. Since their beta had been lost in the last attack, which he was still mourning deeply since the alpha and beta were always close, he would have to go talk to the next best wolf that he trusted with these kinds of things; Aria, the pack's healer.

The alpha turned and ran back to the house, traveling at a fairly quick pace though not quick enough for it to be like there was an emergency. Upon arriving, Chase shifted back into his human form and entered the house, though not without first catching the healer's scent. It was strong enough to tell him she was close by, and he didn't have to look long to find her. Entering into the kitchen where he found her, the second room he checked, he said to her, "Hey, Aria. Do you have a moment? I'd like your opinion on some stuff."

Night watch wasn't too bad, and she didn't mind it. It just left her... sleep deprived. Kate yawned about 20 times on her way back to the others, though she tried her best to lessen that so she didn't somehow worry anyone. They were tight, and so they always easily worried about one another, and with all that they've been going through, she didn't want them to be worrying about a little thing such as sleep deprivation. She paused by a stream to take a few sips of water to wet her parched throat, for she was pretty sure it had been at least 5 hours since she last was able to get a drink. No, that's not good, but she was getting one now, so that had to count for something, right? After drinking her fill, she turned and continued her journey back to the pack.

Of course, it couldn't really be called much of a journey since it only took maybe 3 minutes to get back. When they had arrived here, they made themselves a temporary territory, created by their strong alpha Brooke, a sort of miniature home away from home. It still wasn't ideal, though. It was very far from ideal. She wanted to go home, to go back to their own territory and be content. But no, those stupid humans had to come and be stupid humans, and this stupid pack had to be stupid. Why couldn't they just share for a little while? Yes, it was breaking ancient customs, but these were desperate times. The last few packs they had visited were either all killed off or gone, like them. It seemed this pack was the last to be able to still stand up to these human hunters.

We could join forces and strengthen each other's numbers by fighting the humans together, she thought to herself. Why couldn't the alpha of this other pack see that? Thinking about all of this was making her frustrated again, and she decided to push it out of her mind for, again, the sake of not worrying anyone. There were larger problems to deal with. Besides, she was getting close to where the others were. It seemed like Brooke had already awoken, and Dimitri was gone as well, no doubt having followed the alpha off to wherever she was going to talk about alpha-beta stuff.

Oh well. It wasn't like she necessarily needed to talk with either of them at the moment. Now, her first thought was either sleep or coffee. Or a bit of both. The coffee came to her first, literally. Virva, the pack's healer who seemed to have spotted her arrival from night watch, came over to her with a warm cup of hot coffee, and it smelled absolutely delicious. Kate shifted into her human form and sighed quietly, quite frankly surprised she still had the energy to do that, and then turned her head and smiled at the healer. "Thank you," she said before taking the thermos and drinking a few sips. The warm liquid ran down her throat, sending its warmth through the rest of her. After swallowing the sips, she glanced over at Virva and said, "So, anything exciting happen while I was gone?"

Brought back from her numerous thoughts of medical terms and harvesting plants, Aria emitted a curious sound and lifted her head to see she was no longer alone in the kitchen. A flicker of life entered her face, momentarily disregarding all thoughts and per usual distance of others upon fully registering who she was seeing. Straightening up from her slouching posture, a second nature habit of just being on her best display when in the presence of the Alpha, Aria lightly folded her arms over her chest and stood at ready for whatever he had to say.
Tilting her head with obvious curiosity and intrigue, she answered in a soft voice,"I do, what is it that concerns you?"

Aria was always willing to give aid, if it suited her best interests, didn't mean she couldn't be a little ball of stubbornness when she didn't want to do something. For the most part, however, she gave as much time to every little pack-related thing as she did in her healing researches, perhaps even more the former since the loss of the Beta. That had been a very sorrowful day, as the Beta was one of the few Aria ever let get close enough to be considered her friend. One of the rare occasions that the quirky healer ever wept in mourning.
It may not have been her place but she just felt obligated to help in other fields that may not have anything to do with her current ranking status.

Upon seeing the pack's healer, Chase felt a great sense of relief wash through him. Aria always seemed to have this magical way of making him less stressed. Maybe it was her good aura or something. Either way, his chest felt lighter, like a great weight had been taken off of it, and it felt extremely nice. Taking a few moments to breathe in a more relaxed manner, a little surprised to find how tense he had been up until his arrival, he relaxed his whole composure a little so he didn't make himself sore and then proceeded to talk. There was so much he wanted to say, but first, he didn't want to bombard her with information, and second, he felt that if he blurted out everything to her it would be like him trying to dump stuff on a therapist or something, which was definitely not what he wanted to do.

Okay, he was thinking too much again. Oops. Shaking his head just the slightest bit to clear his mind, he looked up at her and cleared his throat. "Ah, sorry about that. There's a lot on my mind right now." Chase walked over and grabbed himself a glass of water real quick before coming back and pulling up a chair across from the healer. Sitting down, he took a sip and then set the glass down on the table before speaking again. "So, it's about this other pack. Remember? I was telling you about them a few days ago when we first started getting reports." He sighed, absentmindedly running a hand through his hair, a habit he picked up when he was feeling stressed. "Long story short, they're still right outside the eastern border. I would like to see if we can work something out with them; however, there's the matter of the ancient values of our land, and also the fact that we don't really know that much, if anything, about them."

Clearing his throat again, he picked up the glass and took another sip of water. Finishing it, since it was just a small glass of water, he set the empty glass back down on the table and shifted his position. "I'm going to try and contact them later today, maybe even have a face-to-face meeting with their alpha. For that, I'll need someone trusted to come with me. Would you mind being that person if that situation does arise? Depending on how things go, I'll see what to do there, and possibly end up consulting you on that next decision."
