When I was little, I could never understand how a compass worked, even when it was explained during school. x'D
At my old house, I knew which cardinal direction was where(ie. frontyard pointed to the east, backyard pointed to the west, and so on), so I'd hold a compass and try to figure out why it wasn't working, when in actuality, it was. For some reason my brain couldn't wrap around the concept of it, and so I'd stand there facing east or west, and the needle would do the opposite of the direction I was facing. I would never face north because I knew where it was but it wouldn't help be understand. When I was little, I always thought compasses pointed in the direction your facing, not just north.
Then one night(I was perhaps in my early teens by now), I was weeding out some of my stuff and I came across this old science kit I had, and it had a compass in it and so I started looking at it. Even then I still didn't understand how compasses work and pretty much just came to accept it.
Well, as I'm looking at it, my body is facing south and so the needle is obviously pointing the opposite direction, not really thinking much of it, I start turning it side to side, the needle still pointing to where my back was facing.
It was then I had an epiphany!
Only then understanding that it doesn't matter how you hold the compass, but wherever the needle points is North, and so you reposition yourself to face and follow where that needle is pointing. xD
Yeeeeaahhh, despite being an A Honor-Roll student, I never understood how a compass worked till much later.
