Why did we migrate? What's the benefit?
- For starters, this setup is MUCH faster, as I hope some of you will notice. Pet images should load way faster than they used to, especially when you're looking at a hundred or more on one page. This should also greatly speed up trading, as loading users' pet collections should not be quite as slow.
- Ever since we opened, we've been using GoDaddy shared hosting. Basically, we were sharing our server resources with other active sites. Eldemore has definitely outgrown this, especially now that our database is almost a gigabyte.
- We've been having trouble sending out emails for a good while, especially important ones like account activation emails. That's largely why we've been manually activating users. This shouldn't be as much of an issue now.
- Our new setup is a virtual private server (VPS), so it's totally ours to customize as much as we want.
I still have a bunch of configuration and optimization to do, but pretty soon, we'll be back up to 100%.
If you or someone you know is having problems connecting, and especially if you are getting the "pageok" error, you very well may be contacting the old server. I would first try this handy tutorial for flushing your dns cache. Otherwise, just try again in an hour.
Basically, when I changed eldemore's ip address to the new server, that change has to be sent out to nameservers all around the world. So that process can take up to 48 hours. But, most of you (especially in the US) shouldn't notice a problem.
We've got big things in the works, so we hope you will all stick around to enjoy them
